High time we learnt a lesson from Zimbabwe

It’s troublesome, but read it anyway. Mosibudi Mangena concludes his article in today’s “Pretoria News”:

Although worrying, the South African political space is still open to allow citizens to mobilize one another in order to move the country in the right direction, away from the path to ruin. A failed state or one in turmoil is no joke; ask Zimbabweans or Somalis, if you want to know.”

South Africa – a failed state? Troubling prospects indeed, even if it’s becoming more and more a common perception.  And who can blame those that share this view. There are more people dependent on state support than people earning their own living. More than 25% unemployment and that’s being conservative – and Mangena adds even more reasons. Read more about his view and why he thinks it’s “High time we learnt a lesson from Zimbabwe – Pretoria News | Opinion“.

Losung und Lehrtext für Dienstag, den 23. Oktober 2012

Losung und Lehrtext für Dienstag, den 23. Oktober 2012

Then the LORD said: “See … You are to say everything I command you.” (Exo 7:1-2 NIV) [“Der HERR sprach zu Mose: Du sollst alles reden, was ich dir gebieten werde.” (2.Mose 7,1.2)] That’s a clear command and mandate from the Lord. Everybody should consider that before opening his/her mouth. That’s the rule and standard by which we are going to be measured at the coming Judgement before Jesus Christ the Lord and final judge of all. That holds true especially for pastors, teachers and bishops, who speak “in the name of the Lord”: Demands, admonitions, warnings, critique, consolations, promises of forgiveness, grace and peace. Careful not to ask more or less than what the Lord God himself has required. Anxious not to promise more than the Lord himself has given us sure reason to hope for. Who would want to declare war, when God has set his eyes on peace? Who would pronounce peace, where God is preparing for war? That is why we who follow Jesus as Lord and God, should sharpen our ears: “Speak o Lord, for your servant is hearing, listening and obeying!” All ears for what the Lord says in his holy word and pleading: “Grant us your holy Spirit – O Lord – so that he may lead and guide us in all truth. Your word is the truth!”

That is all the more important as many look and listen, what we, who belong to the Lord and to his Church, stand for in thought, word and deed. They are  so eager to hear from Christians, what we promote and what we hope for – even if they look bored and by no means interested. Don’t let that averted look fool you: They are looking and listening intently, because lastly they want to know, who sent us and by what authority we think, say and do that. You might consider that irrelevant, but your Lord has called you to be his witness in word and deeds. He has granted you his Holy Spirit again and again – sometimes even with the laying on of hands: “Receive the Holy Spirit!” That’s the Spirit that leads in divine truth and reminds us of everything Jesus Christ himself taught his Church since the very beginning and through his most holy apostles and prophets of old.  God the Father himself declared: “This is my beloved son – listen to him!” And Jesus Christ sent his disciples and friends to the ends of the earth with the comforting authorization: “As the Father sent me, I send you!”. Therefore remember the high and powerful encouragement to not be afraid of men, lords and kings, but to confess the will and promise of our God boldly and don’t waver or hesitate to bring his most gracious consolation to the poor and needy sinners both high and low, because our Lord wants all to be saved and come to the knowledge of truth. Therefore don’t worry, don’t be afraid, don’t put your light under the bushel, but rather speak up for the truth of God, sing to the Lord and praise his name, for he alone is holy and powerful to save those, that need it most: “For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

We pray: “Lord, open my lips that my mouth will declare your praise!

Losung und Lehrtext für Montag, den 22. Oktober 2012

(5.Mose 7,7-8)

The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers … ” (Deu 7:7-8a NIV) That’s good news for all of us little ones – those smaller, poorer,  not as smart, well-off, healthy, prosperous and flourishing as others! It’s really good news for the poor, lowly and despised. It’s encouraging even for those, who are afflicted and troubled because of the shocking state of statistics and numbers and income and status and merit on their own part, but also of the size and impact and worthiness of their congregation and church and denomination and even of that of the “one, holy Christian Church” – because God’s love doesn’t depend on “size” – at least not in the sense it does with us and in our evaluation of things and people and even of holy and divine things and matters. Rather surprisingly the triune God turns this human yardstick, this benchmark of natural law, this universal standard of ours upside down. His dealings with Israel go a long way to prove this point. God chose Israel as the smallest and most insignificant of nations so that the gracious nature of his election would be obvious – not due to own strength, merit or other qualifications on its part. And just think of Jesus Christ – deserted, suffering and so despised and discriminated on the Cross. That’s the beloved Son of God – in his final and all surpassing glorification on the Cross.  That’s the decisive message of the triune God in this regard.

His gracious truth of the gospel all boils down to his compensating and reconciling and healing love and mercy and forgiveness – and that’s enough for everyone. With this he covers up, forgives and heals our lack, our loss and our shortcomings with his divine surplus and creativity. For truly, who would not acknowledge that on a realistic scale according to our evaluations and taken just as we are – we’re all more at the bottom end of the scale – stuck helpless in misery, quite unable to save and sanctify ourselves. Thanks be to God that he has loved us from eternity and drawn, saved and redeemed us out of this misery and hopelessness to himself so that we’re not left to our own devices, but rather safe and sound in his care and goodness – right there in the promised land of his godly presence and divine salvation. That’s the divine grace and mercy that creates all goodness out of nothing. Taste and see, how good your Lord is! The Apostle Saint Paul has got it spot-on: “God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.”(1Co 1:28-29 NIV) Das Geringe vor der Welt und das Verachtete hat Gott erwählt, das, was nichts ist, damit er zunichte mache, was etwas ist. (1.Korinther 1,28)

So – take comfort – that means that you too in all your lowliness are not forgotten or outcast, but rather close and dear to God’s own heart. So much so, that the Father gave his only Son Jesus Christ for you – that you are his beloved son and daughter now and forever. He sanctified you and the entire Christian Church – so that now you – like her – are his most precious bride, soul mate,  spouse: spotless, perfect and oh just so pretty and lovely in his sight – because of what he has done and is doing and is going to do for you and her.

The Holy Spirit enlighten, strengthen and keep you in this true and saving faith + as he lives and rules together with the Father and the Son for you and your salvation now and forever + Amen.

Domesticate rhinos and trade with their horns

Is this a good or bad idea? Domesticating rhinos and making money with their every growing horns? It sounds a bit like cutting your nails and making money by the way. Read this article from the “Landbouweekblad” and judge for yourself: ‘RENOSTERS BESTE PLAASDIERE NÓG’

Piet maak glad somme, sommer so in sy kop, want dit is nodig as jy wil geld maak, skerts hy.

Nou is daar 46 oor.

Buffels kos nou gemiddeld R500 000 stuk.

HOOP : Hernieude stryd teen stropers

LOOP KATVOET IN DIE NAG (Landbouweekblad)

Terwyl ek my pyp stop, hou ek die wild dop wat by my dammetjie kom drink.

Hy is deurgaans betrokke by bewaring, skryf sedert 2005 en het onlangs sy eerste boek, Water under the bridge, self gepubliseer.

Vir my is skerpioene egter fassinerend en ek vind hul gedrag baie interessant.

Gewoonlik is “lewende fossiele” se laaste oorblywende bevolkings hoogs bedreig of baie skaars.

Going to the farmers market

Well, it got late last night. So getting into the motions this morning was a drag. Loading the car with crates and baskets, getting it filled with petrol and my purse with necessary money for the groceries woke me gradually to the beautiful morning in the East of the capital.

At the farmers market in Irene (Pioneer museum) my first stop is the “Italian” bread store just left of the main entrance. Today there was just one ou tannie (my age!) and old Jonas taking the orders. Don’t know where the other jovial ladies were. They surpass each other in exposing with some drama what they have done and thought throughout the week. It’s like being in a life sit-com – or listening to a radio broadcast without commercial breaks – and as my afrikaans friends would say: “Dis ‘n gebabbel!”  Well, today they were struggling with adding up – especially when a girl got 15 loaves of the sour dough and rye variety. It adds to the confusion if the costumers try helpfully advise, but all come up with various options. Thankfully they’re not all grumpy and struggling with a head-ache. So there’s just smiles all around, some chuckles and only a few grunts.

The couple selling eggs, flowers and vegetables complained about what the hail had done to their shade cloth covering the nursery during the night, but got laughing again while describing how the chickens had found refuge in the house and the goats/donkeys inside the laundry. The wife eagerly pulled her camera (“mik en druk“) to prove her point, showing the damage by the hail and the misery of the animals, which in turn had them all smiles yet again. They’re a German couple and I just love their accent. So I never try switching to our mother tongue when they tell their stories and them not picking up mine just goes to show, how far off they are. It’s not only about the accent however. They are really expert egg sellers. Their eggs are measure precisely and price tagged accordingly. They have explained the various sizes: Small, medium, large, extra-large and jumbo in fractions of millimeters. You see, I trust them, because anyone who is faithful in these little things – will be faithful in the other stuff too. That’s what our Lord and master says and I’m with him on that one – and not only that one either.

Buying fresh strawberries is a joy on its own. Add to that the wonderful voice of the Irish lass selling them and you can imagine what I’m talking about. Her husband speaks “our tongue”, but doesn’t really say much. Hence it’s worthwhile inquiring about the frozen and fresh and further strawberries or related stuff just to hear this delightful English modulation from the north. It’s music in my ears – and You can see by this time I really am awake. As I move on this early morning melody is slowly integrated into the voice of Sonja Herholdt singing over the loudspeakers: “Bring vir die, Harlekyn nog wyn, Rooiwyn, vir sy lag en traan en pyn, Hy wys ons, die nuwe wind wat waai, Van die Vaal tot, onder in Saldanhabaai.” (http://www.liriekfabriek.co.za/sonja_herholdt/harlekyn.htm) It’s quite early for such melodramatic lines, but well – that’s what happens in real life.

The mud paths are nicely strewn with rough gravel and white pebbles – at least in most places. Hardly any  puddles left and only a few muddied spots yet, because the place does stretch out a bit under the trees and along the creek. So still enough opportunity to puddle and mess up if you really want to. Checking out these and those delicate feet strapped in frail tongs or simple sandals its surprising that they are not muddied – spotless. I’m fascinated by the brightly coloured toenails: red as rubies or rather like those strawberries above or cherries far away or just beetroot. It’s as if these precious feet are just running on carpets at some gala event and not on the drenched pathways of the farmer’s market. Judging by these dainty feet its not all bad that comes from the SA schooling system. It has taught some of us at least: Keep your feet clean! That’s a start, don’t you think? Well, perhaps they learnt that somewhere else. And perhaps they’re not some of us, but belong to the elfish folk or fairies even, who are en route out and away to more peaceful shores – not really one of us commoners, who get messed up even with gumboots and all the rest.

The honey girl is of German descent too, but that’s history. Now she’s from here and talks like that too. She doesn’t have coloured toenails or fingernails for that matter either. She’s the beekeeper type – more green, than red I’d say. Not really politically inclined, more rustic, perhaps with a sprinkle bohemian touch to it.  Something close to the ancient monastic type – or would it be more hermit? Their bottled honey are labeled  “Deutsche Imkerei.” Angelika says, that’s because their bees still do summsumm in that speech. There was no Boekenhout honey this time around, but some from aloes, bluegum and lots of raw honey too. Big and small containers – even buckets full of the delicious nectar of flowers. Right there to enjoy.

Roses, artichokes, oranges and naartjies are sold by Charl en Christa Mouton from around Brits. They have all sort of preservatives for sale too. She raps those pink, red,  orange and yellow roses in old newspapers while getting all lyrical about watching the spectacular thunderstorm last evening, which they watched from a distance from their porch overlooking their valley and listening to the many birds going about their business – afraid that the summer is just too short and that winter is surely coming. The Moutons have gone into the sheep business now. Their touch of excitement and enthusiasm is contagious. A few months ago they were still thinking about moving to the Karoo or even further west. Now they seem to have settled for staying a bit longer and it seems good that that’s decided. A happy couple and happy to share the joys of their busy life on the farm. Get’s me all nostalgic as they talk more about the duikers picking off the rose buds, the kudus stripping these tasty stems like vegetarian sosaaties (kebabs/Schaschlik) while the wildebeest/gnu graze them right down to the ground like a lawnmower – yet all of these wild ones are careful not to trample the plants like domesticated (read: stupid) cattle do. Love these people and their life-style with all its problems the size of mosquitoes during the night and flies during the day!

I just glance hastily at the tables laden heavily with meat, but pass by. This time no time to catch up with the christian missionaries from S.Korea, nor do I stop with my old  friend, who goes fishing in Mozambique every now and again, then sometimes hunting up in the bush veld or just flies off visiting down under in Australia. Today I just leave his spinach, lettuce, carrots, leaks, radishes, patty pans in green and yellow and don’t even stop to chat with Hendrick – my ou boere pal – either. He, the old Blue Bulls fan, who has beef, pork, lamb and chicken for sale, is busy piling up various cuts and packs onto his table: fillets, wings, drumsticks, half- and full sizes, ribs, tjops, mince, T-bones, rump, skilpaadjies (Nieren in Netzfett), boerewors – but no biltong. That’s just a few more stands further down the way. No, today I’m just going to stop with Tony Parreira my Portugese friend, who is so eager to tell me about the success of their latest fundraiser at the Catholic Church in Rustenburg. 15 other Portugese families met last weekend and made up the annual budget shortfall. Well, if you hear that they auctioned off one sheep for R50,000 ($6,500) you can understand how and why he was eager to talk about it. After success in that more or less pious affair they all hit it off to Sun City – and probably cashed in (or out!) even more. Well, that has then taken care of this years indulgences too I presume. Tony’s a good guy – even if he sometimes does try to sell me veggies that are already half-cooked (or should we say: “soft”). In afrikaans you just say: “Vrot!” Well, I already bought my veggies when his mother was still in charge more than a decade ago – and I’ll probably stick around with him a bit longer too. Not gonna change just for a vrot kol here and there, now and again,  would I?

On the way out I pick up milk and yogurt at David’s “Valley Farm Stall”. He’s from Kenya, where his parents stayed as long as his father was teacher in Uganda. They moved out – (read: “They were kicked out”) – under Idi Amin and starting the dairy here some thirty years ago. He puts up jokes, chats to the people and is busy raking in money as the people queue up for his dairy products. Today he’s not there. He’s on holiday in Umhlanga as one of his many assistants is quick to point out. She’s fluent in German and even get’s her “Hoefflichkeitsform” right. So we’re busy “Sie” here and “Sie” there. Always jovial, always ready for a laugh – that’s her and in no time the rucksack is tied-up too and we’re off to pick up Katrina and have the first coffee of the day!

Having packed the baskets and balancing the heavy rucksack its back to the parking area. Slowly walking against the hordes of late comers moving in. Careful not to bump anyone or drop anything, but still offended by willing hands: “Kan ek oom help dra?” I’m not ready for that yet. It’s really too early to leave yet – there’s still so much to see and do, so many people to meet like Christiane putting up her “vet plante” for sale, getting some cheese with the Dutch pioneers, turkey with the Polish immigrants or artsy crafts from the Nigerians. Perhaps next time. I’m just grateful that the praise band demanding insistingly: “Walk in the light!” have overslept or are on a mission trip somewhere else or have just gone back home. Sonja Heroldt is about as much as I can take this early. I’m just not up to some foreign bunch of enthusiasts trying far too passionately  to convert me to their bouncy ways. Sort of: Now you see me, now you don’t. That really is too much for me. Just remembering their previous attempts to convert me early in the morning, get’s me all tensed up again. Gives me cramps of a sort, you know – seriously. So I’m glad to just see the Chinese selling spring rolls and other deep fried delicacies, more roses, even electronic shockers for self-defense, organic guano fertilizer and even the guy in khaki selling hardekool and other prime wood. That should serve well for Saturday afternoon with braaivleis, sunny skies … listening to the semi-final between Blue Bulls and the Sharks right there in the Shark-tank in Durban. Somewhere in the background there’s lekker boeremusik – and that’s just fine with me.

An army issue Unimog is parked next to my vehicle and even the nice bakkie next to it seems dwarfed by its imposing wheels and chassis, prompting the remark to its driver: “Dis jou bakkie se Moses die!” With that you don’t have to worry about sidewalks, trees or dongas, never mind getting your feet wet or soiled. That’s the real solution to stuffed-up roads and countless potholes – if your not blessed as those light-footed fairies and elvish folk mentioned above.

Losung und Lehrtext für Samstag, den 20. Oktober 2012

And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:10 NIV)

Losung und Lehrtext für Samstag, den 20. Oktober 2012

(1.Samuel 2,2) And that’s a fact – even if we learn from the same Lord and God: “You are to be holy like I am holy”. Who can live up to that standard with God’s righteousness, sanctity and perfection. If you sin at one, you’re guilty of all and even on our best days we are but poor, miserable sinners – not fit to stand before the most holy God of all – the Lord Zebaoth – Jesus Christ is his name and he’s the Judge of all! And there is no partiality on his part – no favoritism, bribes or ways around his eternal law. That’s the reason why in the sight of the law we are lost, sure to be condemned and as that hopeless cases. Yet, and that was Martin Luther’s message, which he had not come up with, but which God himself revealed to him by the gracious gift of the Holy Spirit and opening up the true understanding of the holy scriptures from the very beginning. So Luther was converted very much like the apostle St. Paul to believe and trust by God’s grace that God’s holiness is of such a nature that he makes us holy too. He draws us to himself by his gracious and most merciful holiness covering our sins with the precious blood Jesus and grants us forgiveness of all our sins and iniquities. Jesus Christ is the lamb of God, that carries the sins of the world, so that everybody who believes and trusts in him, will not be lost, but has eternal life and blessed salvation + Therefore it is true: “Einen andern Grund kann niemand legen als den, der gelegt ist, welcher ist Jesus Christus.” (1.Korinther 3,11) There is no other way to the Father and into heaven, but in Jesus Christ. He is the source, means and end of our salvation – the be all and end all, everything is found in him. Praise be to his holy name + Amen, Amen + Thanks to you Lord Jesus Christ – our God and our salvation.

Vavi & Cosatu: You get what you sow or something like that…

ZWELINZIMA VAVI AND COSATU – WORDS AND ACTIONS
By Dave Steward, executive director of the FW de Klerk Foundation

It is hard not to like Zwelinzima Vavi. He passionately expresses views that most reasonable South Africans strongly endorse: he decries the parlous state of our education system; he warns us of the dire implications of unemployment, poverty and inequality; and he is scathingly critical of government corruption.

He expressed such views again on 17 October when he delivered UNISA’s Annual Peace, Safety and Human Rights Memorial Lecture in Johannesburg. According to his hosts, Vavi was chosen to deliver the lecture because he had “stood out as an exemplary leader espousing values and a vision for the best interests of our society…”

Well, what are Vavi’s values and vision? Are they in the best interest of society – and how do they resonate with Cosatu’s actions?

Vavi has in the past been rightly critical of our shocking education performance. And yet one of the main causes of the crisis (there are several others) is the undisciplined role played by Cosatu’s affiliate, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu).  According to the National Diagnostic Report, teachers in black schools (nearly all Sadtu members) spend only 3.5 hours per day teaching – compared with 6.5 hours per day in integrated former Model C Schools. Sadtu resolutely opposes performance agreements for school principals and has seriously damaged the prospects of matric writers by calling disruptive teachers’ strikes.

In his lecture, Vavi warmly endorsed Abdullah Omar’s exhortation that “resistance to oppression and tyranny is never over and we are required to constantly renew our commitment to the cause of development, equality and freedom”. And yet Cosatu and its SACP allies are committed to the establishment of a socialist (i.e. communist) state in which there would be about as much freedom as there is in Cuba. At its 10th Congress in 2009, Cosatu committed itself “to build Marxism-Leninism as a tool of scientific inquiry,” and to “build a socialist movement coalescing around the SACP.” At its 2006 Congress, Cosatu asserted that “the dictatorship of the proletariat is the only guarantee that there will be a transition from National Democratic Revolution to socialism”. How does Mr Vavi square this with his professed commitment to freedom – or with the democratic values in our Constitution?

Vavi is indignantly critical of the rampant corruption. All South Africa’s problems, he said, “are made worse by the parallel crisis of corruption and crime, squandering of public resources and woeful incompetence…” Why then is Cosatu not insisting on the election of leaders with unblemished records at the ANC’s National Conference in December?

The dissonance between Vavi’s words and reality reach their climax when he deals with unemployment and inequality. Our unemployment crisis has several causes but Cosatu itself is, without doubt, one of the main culprits:

  • South Africa has one of the highest levels of strikes in the world. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report it is the worst of 144 countries assessed in terms of co-operation in labour-employer relations;
  • Cosatu has continuously raised labour costs without commensurate productivity increases – which has inevitably resulted in job losses. South Africa’s flexibility of wage determination is the fourth worst in the world.
  • Cosatu has secured labour legislation that is amongst the most onerous anywhere. Its campaign to abolish labour brokers would result in the loss of another 500 000 – 1 000 000 jobs. South Africa’s hiring and firing practices are the second worst in the world.
  • It has steadfastly opposed proposals that might have opened labour markets to the unemployed – including proposals at the ANC’s National General Council in 2005 for a two-tier labour system and more recent proposals for a youth employment subsidy.
  • It is destroying present and future jobs by alienating foreign and domestic investors through its confrontational stance and open support for nationalisation. By so doing it is stifling prospects for the rapid and sustained economic growth that is essential for the elimination of inequality and poverty.

Unemployment, in turn, is one of the main causes of inequality. Vavi complains – quite correctly – that inequality “has now risen to a level that has made us the most unequal society in the world” in which “80% of South Africans receive just 25% of the national income.”

Predictably, Vavi cites the “racial dimension” as one of the main manifestations of inequality. But this is decreasingly so: half of Cosatu’s members now earn more than 25% of whites. Nor are many of Cosatu’s members the downtrodden proletariat that he depicts. The package of Lonmin rock drill operators before the recent strike was not R5 600 as Vavi claims, but R11 308. Their new package of almost R12 500 is higher on a PPP basis than average incomes in the Czech Republic, Israel and Poland, and twice as high as average incomes in competitor countries like Chile and Malaysia. It is also higher than the incomes of half the white population.

Vavi proclaims that “Cosatu must be the champion of the interests of the poor; it must be the voice of the voiceless, the downtrodden and marginalised in our democracy.”

But in reality, it is not. Cosatu is, and always has been, the champion of the interests of its own members, whose median income is over R5 000 a month, compared with the national median income of R2 800. The real inequality divide is between those who have jobs and the 40% of the population who are unemployed. Many Cosatu members – and particularly those who work for the public service – are part of the top 20% who earn 75% of the country’s income. It is not true that Cosatu is the “champion of the interests of the poor”: their interests lie in opening up the labour market, in effective service delivery and in ensuring rapid and sustained economic growth – all causes that are being undermined by Cosatu.

Mr Vavi is clearly an intelligent man who is deeply committed to addressing the critical problems that confront South Africa. In his more introspective moments does he ever wonder whether Cosatu’s ideology and actions might not, perhaps, be responsible for many of the problems that he so passionately criticises?

Losung und Lehrtext für Freitag, den 19. Oktober 2012

und Lehrtext für Freitag, den 19. Oktober 2012

Today’s reading is very close to our synodical theme for December:Der Tag des HERRN kommt und ist nahe.” (Joel 2,1) This is such a encouraging promise and comforting pledge! It makes the lovely day even brighter and changes the gloomy one into brightness too. The cross becomes lighter to bear, the harrowing troubles and concerns seem to weigh less and hope and joy floods the heart. So we can join the singing and confessing: “All is well with my soul” – because Jesus is near. In his presence and with him – I fear no ill. I lift up my face and look forward to seeing him. Now already he takes care of his church, his people, his pastors, teachers and bishops, his followers big and small, far and wide, in every diocese, congregation, house and even shack – he blesses and keeps us in the true faith for his names sake, he lifts up his countenance upon us and is gracious unto us, he lets his light shine upon us and gives us peace + Because his day is close and his coming imminent, we don’t give up, but persevere by his grace and mercy which is new every morning. We lift up our drooping heads and look forward to his coming. He’s coming to save, relieve, heal us and finally to carry us home. What a joyful prospect! Thank God for it.

Until then we take his admonition to heart: Christus spricht: Wachet und betet, dass ihr nicht in Versuchung fallt! (Markus 14,38)

Lord have mercy – Christ have mercy – Lord have mercy +
