und Lehrtext für Freitag, den 19. Oktober 2012

Today’s reading is very close to our synodical theme for December:Der Tag des HERRN kommt und ist nahe.” (Joel 2,1) This is such a encouraging promise and comforting pledge! It makes the lovely day even brighter and changes the gloomy one into brightness too. The cross becomes lighter to bear, the harrowing troubles and concerns seem to weigh less and hope and joy floods the heart. So we can join the singing and confessing: “All is well with my soul” – because Jesus is near. In his presence and with him – I fear no ill. I lift up my face and look forward to seeing him. Now already he takes care of his church, his people, his pastors, teachers and bishops, his followers big and small, far and wide, in every diocese, congregation, house and even shack – he blesses and keeps us in the true faith for his names sake, he lifts up his countenance upon us and is gracious unto us, he lets his light shine upon us and gives us peace + Because his day is close and his coming imminent, we don’t give up, but persevere by his grace and mercy which is new every morning. We lift up our drooping heads and look forward to his coming. He’s coming to save, relieve, heal us and finally to carry us home. What a joyful prospect! Thank God for it.

Until then we take his admonition to heart: Christus spricht: Wachet und betet, dass ihr nicht in Versuchung fallt! Der Geist ist willig; aber das Fleisch ist schwach. (Markus 14,38)

LCSA Church Council meeting

Deputy Bishop Dean Vilakazi

The next two days the LCSA Church Council is meeting in the LHF-Hall at LTS in Tshwane.

Besides regular reports by the bishops and all deans on the Church and the various dioceses, we also have reports by the mission representative P. Christoph Weber (MLC), Lucky Thabethe (LCSA Special Fund) and Dr. Ismael Noko (LWF – Lutheran University in Southern Africa) on the Agenda.

Important matters are also the upcoming ordination course with 8 candidates and the synod of the Church planned for the 2nd week of Advent.

May God bless the proceedings by the richness of his grace and mercy and may he grant his Holy Spirit to dwell among us with all wisdom, discipline and prudence so that we may do what pleases him, trusting his grace and mercy in Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with him and the Holy Spirit – now and forever +++

Losung und Lehrtext für Donnerstag, den 18. Oktober 2012

Losung und Lehrtext für Donnerstag, den 18. Oktober 2012

Des HERRN Wort ist wahrhaftig, und was er zusagt, das hält er gewiss.“(Psalm 33,4) – That is the biggest comfort and well worth living for! That’s the reason why studying theology and especially God’s most holy Word is time well spent and worth every effort. Especially in a time, where so many empty promises are made and just too many loose all faith. May the triune God grant in his mercy that we rather follow the example of Abraham and Sara – the parents of faith – of whom the writer to the Hebrew pens down: “Durch den Glauben empfing Sara, die unfruchtbar war, Kraft, Nachkommen hervorzubringen trotz ihres Alters; denn sie hielt den für treu, der es verheißen hatte.” (Hebräer 11,11)

Foundation of the Wittenberg University

Leucorea: Halle – Wittenberg University

On this day in 1502 – that is 510 years ago – the University of Wittenberg was founded. It is quite fitting – I think – that Dr. Ishmael Noko from the Lutheran World Federation  is addressing the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa’s Church Council today on matters of a Lutheran University in Southern Africa. The gospel is like a travelling summer rain, well, seems like Lutheran theological education is like that too. It was in Wittenberg Germany once upon a time, now it is no longer there, but has moved on. Perhaps Africa is the place for this in future. God knows!

Holiday of St. Luke: 18th October

Today the Church celebrates the holiday of St. Luke, the evangelist. Read his gospel and the acts of the apostles, which he starts of with these words:”Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luk 1:1-4 NIV)

Lutheran Order of Service

For this 20th Sunday after Trinity we have the watchword from the prophet Micah 6:8: “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV)

As usual the Lutheran order of worship is available in both seTswana (wt1250121021 n Tr 20) and isiZulu (wz1250121021 nTr20). This time there is a sermon based on 1.Cor. 7,29-31 by Pastor E.Sithole (KwaZulu/Natal). This was translated from isiZulu into seTswana by Rev. E.A.W.Weber DD – and thanks to the support by the Lutheran Heritage Foundation (LHF) this is also available as hard-copy. If you want that, please let us know.

(Jeremia 15,20)

and he confirms he’s gracious presence to those gathered in his name: “Wo zwei oder drei versammelt sind in meinem Namen, da bin ich mitten unter ihnen.” (Matthäus 18,20)
