Second Sunday in Lent (Reminiscere)

God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 (Watchword)

Hymn of the Lutheran Church

  1. When in the hour of deepest need
    We know not where to look for aid;
    When days and nights of anxious thought
    No help or counsel yet have brought,
  2. Then is our comfort this alone,
    That we may meet before Thy throne
    And cry, O faithful God, to Thee
    For rescue from our misery;
  3. To Thee may raise our hearts and eyes,
    Repenting sore with bitter sighs,
    And seek Thy pardon for our sin
    And respite from our griefs within.
  4. For Thou hast promised graciously
    To hear all those who cry to Thee
    Through Him whose name alone is great,
    Our Savior and our Advocate.
  5. And thus we come, O God, today
    And all our woes before Thee lay;
    For sorely tried, cast down, we stand,
    Perplexed by fears on ev’ry hand.
  6. O from our sins, Lord, turn Thy face;
    Absolve us through Thy boundless grace,
    Be with us in our anguish still,
    Free us at last from ev’ry ill,
  7. That so with all our hearts we may
    To Thee our glad thanksgivings pay,
    Then walk obedient to Thy Word
    And now and ever praise Thee, Lord.

God´s Holy Word for this Sunday

The Introit teaches us to pray in a God pleasing way:

O Lord, I come before you in prayer. My God, I trust in you.
Please do not let me be humiliated; do not let my enemies triumphantly rejoice over me.
Certainly none who rely on you will be humiliated.
Those who deal in treachery will be thwarted and humiliated.
Make me understand your ways, O Lord. Teach me your paths.
Guide me into your truth and teach me. For you are the God who delivers me;on you I rely all day long. Remember your compassionate and faithful deeds, O Lord, for you have always acted in this manner.
Do not hold against me the sins of my youth or my rebellious acts.
Because you are faithful to me, extend to me your favor, O Lord.
The Lord is both kind and fair; that is why he teaches sinners the right way to live.
May he show the humble what is right. May he teach the humble his way.
The Lord always proves faithful and reliable to those who follow the demands of his covenant. For the sake of your reputation, O Lord, forgive my sin, because it is great.

Psalm 25: 1-11

Inspired the holy prophet Isaiah proclaims in God´s name:

I will sing to my love— a song to my lover about his vineyard. My love had a vineyard on a fertile hill. He built a hedge around it, removed its stones, and planted a vine. He built a tower in the middle of it and constructed a winepress. He waited for it to produce edible grapes, but it produced sour ones instead.

So now, residents of Jerusalem, people of Judah, you decide between me and my vineyard! What more can I do for my vineyard beyond what I have already done? When I waited for it to produce edible grapes, why did it produce sour ones instead?

Now I will inform you what I am about to do to my vineyard: I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture, I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there. I will make it a wasteland; no one will prune its vines or hoe its ground, and thorns and briers will grow there. I will order the clouds not to drop any rain on it. Indeed, Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice but look what he got – disobedience! He waited for fairness but look what he got – cries for help!

Isaiah 5: 1-7

The holy apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ – St. Paul – writes to the Romans

Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God’s glory. Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (For rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person perhaps someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, because we have now been declared righteous by his blood we will be saved through him from God’s wrath. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, since we have been reconciled, will we be saved by his life? Not only this, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.

Romans 5: 1-11

Our holy Lord and Savior Jesus Christ says:

Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God.

John 3:14-21

And again he spoke to them in parables (Sermon text)

A man planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went on a journey. At harvest time he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his portion of the crop. But those tenants seized his slave, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. So he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously. He sent another, and that one they killed. This happened to many others, some of whom were beaten, others killed. He had one left, his one dear son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ So they seized him, killed him, and threw his body out of the vineyard.

What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

Now they wanted to arrest him (but they feared the crowd), because they realized that he told this parable against them. So they left him and went away.

Mark 12:1-12

Sermon outline

  • God demonstrates his love towards us: Love unheard!
    • Sending his apostles, prophets and Son (Isaiah 5 and Mk.12)
    • Our rejection and rebellion +
    • He suffers and dies for us – satisfactorily – whilst we were still enemies – and becomes the cornerstone + John 3:14-21: Altar in St. Marys – just like the serpent in the desert was lifted up.

Prayer of the Church—Responsive Form (Reminiscere: 5.March 2023)

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Lord God, You sent Your Son first to the lost sheep of the house of Israel before spreading the cover of Your wings over all nations. Move to jealousy those of Your ancient people who refuse the witness of the Messiah, and lead them by Your Spirit to receive Him in faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, You have knit Jew and Gentile — and all the nations of the world — into Your one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. Lead us ever more deeply into the unity You desire for Your people, that we may bear one another’s burdens in prayer and in works of mercy. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, Your people of old honored the affliction of Jacob by abstaining from the sinew of the thigh. Help us to honor our fathers in the faith who have suffered for the sake of Your precious Gospel, and set our hearts to follow their faithful and bold example. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, Your servant Jacob sent his family ahead that he might wrestle with You in prayer. Strengthen the hearts of fathers in our church, that they likewise would provide for their families and strive with You in prayer until they receive Your blessing. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, You watch over the ways of Your people and call us to please You. Lead us to control our bodies and to flee all immorality, that we might show a godly witness in this world and adorn Your Gospel with a holy life. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, help us earnestly to seek Your blessing, though it comes together with affliction. Give us eyes to see through these trials, which come from Your hand, to the endurance, character and hope they produce in Your children. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, You hear the cries of the severely oppressed and bless them with healing in Your appointed season. Comfort those who wait on You especially June, Lutz, Vadym, Kyril, Matt, Christoph, Friederike & Olly, Detlev & Biljana]. Increase their faith, and bring them through their trials. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, though it is not right to give the children’s bread to dogs or to cast pearls before swine, even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table. Receive us in Your mercy and enable all who commune to make the good confession, both of our sin and of You, our only Savior, that we may receive Your true body and blood and be forgiven. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with You + Pax vobiscum +

The Lord bless Thee, and keep Thee:

The Lord make his face shine upon Thee, and be gracious unto Thee:

The Lord lift up his countenance upon Thee and give Thee peace.

Amen.

Thank You from Antonina Shapovalova

Natalia Zubrytska shares a thank-you-letter from her friend Antonina Shapovalova, who has moved on from the Old Latin School to her own private quarters in Luthercity Wittenberg. We are so grateful, that she is coping so well in these difficult times and dedicate her to the gracious care of our good Lord and triune God, her and all her people + May He grant peace now and always +

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

My name is Antonina Shapovalova. I am from near Kharkiv, Ukraine. Last year, when Russia started the terrible war in my country, I had to flee to Germany.

The Lord brought me to a small but beautiful town Lutherstadt Wittenberg where I was lucky to meet Ukrainian Lutheran Church which gave me a tremendous help in settling down.

The person that I am especially grateful to is pastor Weber who opened lodging for me in the Old Latin School in the time when I was basically homeless. He met me with his friendly simile and open heart. I remember how much I was broken down and my eyes were full of tears when I came through the doors of the Old Latin School.

However, I still remember that pastor Weber assured me of my safety in the Old Latin School – and the Old Latin School proved just that. It is a safe place for me and other Ukrainian refugees in troubled times. Thank You to faithful friends and supporters in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for sponsoring this refuge for us and fellow Lutherans from Ukraine. We will not forget Your gracious hospitality provided here in the Old Latin School.

I lived in the Old Latin School for more than half a year before I managed to find a small apartment of my own in town. Now, I attend German Integration Courses and intensively study the language. My son–in-law is on the front line in daily battle and I pray and ask God to keep him safe. Please add him and our nation to Your prayers. I send our soldiers warm clothes, food and necessary medicine on a regular basis. They need it so much.

I am confident that one day in the near future all the Ukrainians and the whole world will be celebrating the Victory of Ukraine!  Glory to Ukrainian soldiers! Glory to Christ!

Antonia Shapovalova

Alsdann rief er in großer Not

1. Johannes 3,8 (Wochenspruch)
“Man of sorrows” (1860) David Dyce (1806-1864) National Galleries of Scotland

Fortlaufende Lesung

Was wollen wir hierzu sagen?

Amen.Orate fratres S.125

O hilf, Christe, Gottes Sohn

1. Johannes 3,8 (Wochenspruch)

Barthélemy Parrocel (1595–1663): “Jésus au desert” (Musée du Pays Brignolais)

O hilf, Christe, Gottes Sohn,
durch Dein bitter Leiden,
daß wir Dir stets untertan,
all Untugend meiden,
Deinen Tod und sein Ursach
fruchtbarlich bedenken
dafür, wiewohl arm und schwach,
Dir Dankopfer schenken.

“Patris sapientia” (14. Jhd.), verdeutscht 1531 von Matthias Weiße (LKG 128,8)

Fortlaufende Lese

1. Johannes 3,8

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) Die Grablegung Christi

Da man hatt‘ zur Vesperzeit
die Schächer zerbrochen,
ward Jesus in seine Seit‘
mit ein’m Speer gestochen;
daraus Blut und Wasser rann,
die Schrift zu erfüllen;
wie Johannes zeiget an,
nur um unsertwillen.

Da der Tag sein Ende nahm,
der Abend war kommen,
ward Jesus von’s Kreuzes-Stamm
durch Joseph genommen,
herrlich nach jüdischer Art
in ein Grab geleget,
allda mit Hütern verwahrt,
wie Matthäus zeuget.

“Patris sapiential” (14.Jhd) verdeutscht von Michael Weiße 1531 (LKG 128,6f)

Fortlaufende Lese

Jakobus 4,1-10

First Sunday in Lent (Invocavit)

For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

1. John 3,8b (Watchword)

Hymn of the Lutheran Church

A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!

Martin Luther 1483-1546

Georges de la Tour (1593-1652): “Job and his mocking wife”

God´s Holy Word for this Sunday

The Introit teaches us to pray in a God pleasing way:

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Psalm 91,1-6.9-12

Inspired the holy prophet Moses proclaims in God´s name:

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.  And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.  Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Genesis 3,1-19 (20-24)

The Letter to the Hebrews points us to our high priest Jesus Christ:

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4,14-16

Our holy Lord and Savior Jesus Christ overcame the temptations of the devil:

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Matthew 4,1-11

This is God´s Word for Sunday´s sermon:

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord. And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips. Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Job 2,1-13

Prayer of the Church—Responsive Form (Invocavit: 26 February 2023)

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

O Lord, You sought Adam and Eve in the garden and called them to repentance. Seek us when we wander from Your Holy Word, and give us contrite hearts to confess our sins and receive the forgiveness and restoration You promise us. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father in heaven, Your Son trampled the serpent underfoot and freed us from sin and death by His own death on the cross. Protect and preserve all called to preach Christ and Him crucified. Command Your angels to guard them in all their ways and bear them up for the sake of Jesus. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord, You created the home as the place where we are brought up in the ways of truth, goodness and mercy. Sustain parents in their sacred charge, and grant that our homes would be places of confession and forgiveness of sins. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord, You have established earthly authorities to punish evil and praise those who do good. Grant our rulers humble hearts to resist the allure of power and to worship You alone. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, Your Son was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to suffer temptation for our sake. Strengthen us when we are tempted, and teach us to rely upon Your Word as our defense against the evil one. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, send Your holy angels to protect and keep us in Your ways, that no evil may befall us. Graciously behold the needy, the sick and the troubled [especially June Johnson]. Satisfy us with long life, and show us Your salvation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, You covered the shame of our first parents with animal skin and thereby foreshadowed the perfect sacrifice of the shedding of Your Son’s blood by which we are cleansed and clothed. Give us the garments of repentance and faith, that we may receive Your Son’s body and blood for the forgiveness of all our sins. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, heavenly Father, You have given us a refuge from the world in the Body of Christ. Protect us from all evils of body and soul, that we would find rest in this life and eternal rest in Your heavenly embrace; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with You + Pax vobiscum +

The Lord bless Thee, and keep Thee:

The Lord make his face shine upon Thee, and be gracious unto Thee:

The Lord lift up his countenance upon Thee and give Thee peace.
