Löhe on Galatians 3:28

Adoration of the Magi1There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Gal 3:28 NIV)

It is divine providence that we are German. He willed that there are different nations. The Lord confused the languages and separated the nations as punishment for their sinful pride and godless endeavour at Babel. In course of time the nations nurtured their various gifts and different talents, which show themselves even as we enter the holy sanctuary.

Satan can’t unite humanity against God. This is a lost cause. However God himself unites his people through the justifying grace as he builds and edifies his Church. He calls people from all nations and different languages to be part of his one herd under his unifying care as the one and only good shepherd. This is a holy and truly profound idea of God. It liberates God’s people throughout the world to be part of his one holy family and congregation. As long as we try to tie the gospel to one language, nationality and even race then we are still thinking along human lines, tied to the vain ways of our fathers and stuck to the derelict traditions of this world, time and age. Yes, if we would tie the gospel to our culture, then we would build up barriers, fences and obstacles, that the Holy Spirit is busy tearing down – ever since Pentecost, when he made it manifest that the Christian Church is not limited to the Jews and their lawful ways, but rather open to people from all nations. It is God’s doing that the barriers are broken down. The unification of the Church is the favourite and dearest endeavour of the triune God. Obviously this is accomplished on no other basis and by no other means than the justification, liberation and unification in Jesus Christ our Lord  +  Amen.

Lord, our God! You desire that we be one just as you are one with your Son. We pray to you: Preserve us in this one truth, that we fear your name and flee the world’s alluring alienation tempting us to sin, so that we would serve you with a pure heart all the days of our life. We ask this in the precious and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (Th.Schäfer)

1 O Christ, our true and only light, Enlighten those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Your voice And in Your fold with us rejoice.

2 Fill with the radiance of Your grace The souls now lost in error’s maze; Enlighten those whose inmost minds Some dark delusion haunts and blinds.

3 O gently call those gone astray That they may find the saving way! Let ev’ry conscience sore oppressed In you find peace and heav’nly rest.

4 Shine on the darkened and the cold; Recall the wand’rers to Your fold. Unite all those who walk apart; Confirm the weak and doubting heart,

5 That they with us may evermore Such grace with wond’ring thanks adore And endless praise to You be giv’n By all Your Church in earth and heav’n. (Johann Hermann, 1585-1647; tr Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878)

Löhe on Phil.1:6

LoeheBeing confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Phi 1:6 KJV)

We are going to heaven and therefore we are proceeding towards the coming Lord. This is a lifelong journey and pilgrimage for all of us. Whoever loves the Lord, may confess this confidently and not be ashamed of opposition or the duration of this life long passage. At the end it will always have been a rather limited period and our efforts will look rather dismal and weak. How easy will the triumph and victory appear then? Then we will be overcome by joy and our mouths will be full of laughter and praises. The Lord sends his help and encouragement from his holy sanctuary and he strengthens us from Zion. Hallelujah +  Amen.

Lord, our God! We thank you, that you accompanied our fathers in Christ and that you were their enlightening sun and protective shield, so that their lives and workings amongst your people was a strong witness to your glory and mercy, truth and abiding faithfulness. Help us like you helped them, so that we to may come from darkness to light, from the petty troubles of our dismal lives to your peace and rest. Help us to fight bravely and to confess your holy gospel fearlessly in this world until we too will come to the end of our course here on earth and enter your heavenly kingdom. Amen. (Hermann Bezzel)

1. Behold a host, arrayed in white, Like thousand snow-clad mountains bright, With palms they stand. Who is this band Before the throne of light? Lo, these are they of glorious fame Who from the great affliction came And in the flood of Jesus’ blood Are cleansed from guilt and blame. Now gathered in the holy place, Their voices they in worship raise, Their anthems swell where God doth dwell, Mid angels’ songs of praise.

2. Despised and scorned, they sojourned here; But now, how glorious they must appear! Those martyrs stand a priestly band, God’s throne forever near. So oft, in troubled days gone by, In anguish they would weep and sigh, At home above the God of Love For aye their tears shall dry. They now enjoy their Sabbath rest, The paschal banquet of the blest; The Lamb, their Lord, at festal board Himself is Host and Guest.

3. Then hail, ye mighty legions, yea, All hail! Now safe and blest for aye, And praise the Lord, who with His Word Sustained you on the way. Ye did the joys of earth disdain, Ye toiled and sowed in tears and pain. Farewell, now bring your sheaves and sing Salvation’s glad refrain. Swing high your palms, lift up your song, Yea, make it myriad voices strong, Eternally shall praise to Thee, God, and the Lamb belong. (Hans Adolf Brorson, c. 1760)

Löhe on Lk 2:21

Beaune,_Collégiale_Notre-Dame,_Tapisseries_de_la_Vierge_014On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. (Luk 2:21 NIV)

There is no doubt that the name of our Lord Jesus derives directly from the heart of the triune God. Not the archangel Gabriel chose that name. He was tasked to communicated that name to the blessed Virgin Mary in good time. This name is worthy of the named and the originator too. It’s a beautiful name in sound and content. It is worthy to be mentioned at every worship, during every prayer and each and every devotional. The omniscient God, whose wisdom and knowledge surpasses all, chose this name to communicate all that he ever wanted to give and grant us in his most beloved and dear Son Jesus Christ. We can therefore find all and everything in this precious name Jesus.

This lovely name, which sprouts directly from the very heart of God, was revealed by the godly angels, heard initially by the dear and most blessed Virgin Mary and learnt by the ancient Church on the very day of our Lord’s circumcision. This is the name for the newly born saviour of the world. That is the name the Church venerates, worships and glorifies above all in its prayers and devotions. It is repeated often every day, countless times across the world. It is the most holy and precious and wonderful and blessed and effective name known to mankind. This very name also opens up the gate of the new year 2014. It is the first name Christians aught to learn. It is the last name they pray with dying voices. It’s the last name we hear when we die and the first name we’ll perceive, realize and experience in eternity. It’s the very essence and sum of all our praises and glorifications here and in our home in heaven. May it resound this year from day to day, from hour to hour! May it be magnified on earth and let all the lands be filled with his glory so that finally all may join us in singing: Glory be to Jesus Christ +  Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, let your name shine over and above all this coming year with its tasks and works that you have prepared for your children to do and accomplish. Grant that your history will cover all the sins of your children, that your today will rule their present life and that the eternity deriving from you will enlighten and permeate them until we all may worship and praise your glorious and holy name beholding you as you are. Amen. (Hermann Bezzel)

1 Jesus! Name of wondrous love! Name all other names above! Unto which must every knee Bow in deep humility.

2 Jesus! Name decreed of old: To the maiden mother told, Kneeling in her lowly cell, By the angel Gabriel.

3 Jesus! Name of priceless worth To the fallen sons of earth, For the promise that it gave– “Jesus shall His people save.”

4 Jesus! Name of mercy mild, Given to the holy Child, When the cup of human woe First He tasted here below.

5 Jesus! only Name that’s given, Under all the mighty heaven, Whereby man, to sin enslaved, Bursts his fetters, and is saved.

6 Jesus! Name of wondrous love! Human Name of God above; Pleading only this we flee, Helpless, O our God, to Thee. (William W. How, 1823-1897)

Löhe on Genesis 32:11

means of grace1I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant (Gen 32:10 NIV)

There are days in our lives – and the last day of a year belong to them – days on which we pause, contemplate and look back before proceeding. This forces every Christian (if he is truthful) to strike his breast and confess: Lord, have mercy on my a poor miserable sinner. However that’s not all. He needs to move on and perceive all the grace, mercies and blessings, which he has undeservedly received from the longsuffering and kindness of God. This should lead him to gratitude and ongoing praises: Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits! (Psa 103:2 KJV) This truthful confession and thankful worship of our Lord prepares you best to move forward into the new year.

Oh, the Lord has to forgive his people so much before they are gathered before his throne. The community of saints – the holy Christian Church – is a rose with many thorns.

Our life is hidden with Christ in God and will only be revealed in his coming glory. That is why it is so often side lined and forgotten. Yet whoever remembers this, should encourage those that are in heavy conflict and due to the many burdens and sufferings of this time and age are in danger to loose hope and to forget the coming glories that are to be revealed to us.

Is it not enough for joy and thankfulness to know that our living Lord is with us every day of our life and that he has counted all our hair and knows everyone of our sighs and laments? As we are his, we want to bear all that he gives us to bear in the coming days and months of the new year. He is going ahead and we follow him and therefore we can’t get lost. Amen.

Faithful Father in heaven! We thank you that we are blessed to finish off this year under your care and goodwill. You have showered us with good all the days of our life. We praise and thank you for our lives, for our bodies and souls, for health and well-being and that you have brought us this far. I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. Forgive us for Christ’s sake, that we have sinned against you and have trespassed your commandments. Help us most graciously that we will come out of this old year and live the new life to which you have called, elected and saved us in Jesus Christ. Let us strive always to please you. Lead us the way, you would want us to proceed on for your holy names sake. Amen. (Wilhelm Löhe)

Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.
