Pastor of the year 2012: Rev. Dr. Gottfried Martens (SELK)

Gottfried MartensOne of the special honours in life is if others acknowledge what your doing. Getting things done in your own sight and from your own perspective is ok, but having others sing your praises means something extra-ordinary has been achieved. That’s why an honorary doctorate weighs so much, because there’s nothing you yourself can do really to achieve it. These honours are awarded by outstanding merit and good impressions made on others are they judge what has been done.

Well, Pastor Dr. Gottfried Martens from St. Marien in Zehlendorf (Berlin, Germany) has been awarded the prestigious accolade: “Pastor of the year” by the evangelical magazine “IdeaSpektrum” for the work he has been doing in that German capital for some decades now. Especially the missionary efforts amongst Iranians have been highlighted. This significant work of a confessional Lutheran as faithful missionary amongst Muslims should be kept in our regular church prayers and petitions. May the Lord of the harvest continue to grant grace, peace and mercy to this church endevour in Berlin and Leipzig and may it encourage faithful missions to the rest of the Muslim world too. The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Pray to the Lord of the harvest that he continue to send faithful and competent workers into his harvest!

Congratulations for this award to Dr. Martens and may it be an encouragement to all involved in this good work, they have been doing in Lutheran missions amongst Iranians and others. I know that Pastor Martens confesses as his master taught us all: “‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'” (Luk 17:10 NIV) Yet I am glad that the good works he has done in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ have been seen and that the name of the triune God has been praised! Hallelujah!

I pray you have a very blessed fourth and last Sunday in Advent and have time to meditate on the watchword from the apostle Saint Paul’s letter to the Philippians:  Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. (4:4-5 NIV)

21st December: Holiday of the apostle St. Thomas

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" (Isa 52:7 NIV)

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isa 52:7 NIV)

Today the Church commemorates the apostle St. Thomas, whom Jesus Christ led from being a hardend sceptic to being an ardent confessor: “My Lord and my God!” Read more about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_the_Apostle

May the Lord and saviour Jesus Christ send his Holy Spirit that he do this gracious work of calling, converting, enlightening, gathering and confirming in the true faith  even today and as we approach Christmas the high holiday of the most holy incarnation of God into our humanity + so that his praises may resound across the globe as in the heavens of the universe.
