Lutheran Order of service in isiZulu/seTswana

rich man and lazarus 2The Lutheran Order of Service for the first Sunday after Trinity is available here in isiZulu and seTswana. The gospel for this Sunday is from Luke 16,19-31 (Rich man and Lazarus), the epistle from 1. John 4,16b-21 and the OT reading from Dt. 6,4-9.  Today’s posting comes with a sermon on the gospel of St. Matthew chapters 9 verses 35-38 and 10 verses 1-7 written by brother Rev. E. Mkhabela (LC Gamalakhe, KZN) in isiZulu (wz1331130602 n Tr 1) and translated as usual into seTswana (wt1331130602 n Tr 1) by my father Rev. E.A.W.Weber DD.

May you have a very blessed weekend and have time to meditate on the watchword for this Sunday. Our Lord Jesus Christ says to his disciples: “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” (Luk 10:16 NIV) The liturgical colour is green.

We thank the Lutheran Heritage Foundation for supporting the distribution of hard-copies of these orders of worship and sermons throughout Southern Africa. If you also want a copy please do not hesitate to subscribe by writing to EAWWeber@bundunet.co.za.

LÖHE ON ROMANS 11:36

vasa sacraFor from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. (Rom 11:36 NIV)

All things are from God, because he has created all and everything. All is maintained through him too, because he does this despite the world’s fall into sin. All and everything is aimed and goaled towards him also as it is his holy will that all that was lost, be found and reinstated and restituted to him finally. God’s creation is maintained by the savior and preserver. It is preserved and even kept from God’s destructive wrath. In the end it is to be restored to its original status by the Spirit of his grace and goodness. Thus God the Lord is all in all really. And because he and his holy, divine actions of creation, preservation and salvation are all in all, therefore the apostle praises him and would have his glory extended for ever and ever and everywhere. St. Paul does not only speak about these three continual actions of our Lord and God however, but also refers to the triune nature of God himself. The magnification and glorification: “To him be the glory forever!” does not only refer to God’s works, but also points to his essential nature as triune God. We follow suit and praise God for what he does and who he is – now and forever.

Lord God, almighty Father, creator of heaven and earth, all that is visible and invisible. You loved us before the foundation of this world. Praise be to your holy name! Lord Jesus Christ, you glorious Son of the eternal Father! You have saved us through your most precious blood. You are worthy to take honor and glory. Lord, Holy Spirit! You are our comforter and true advocate. We thank you for sanctifying us and leading us in all truth. Holy triune God! Yours is all praise, thanks and worship of the holy assembly in Jesus Christ – now and forever and everywhere. Amen. (Churchbook of Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1927)

We believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Ever present help in need, praised by all the heavenly host; By Whose mighty power alone all is made and wrought and done.

We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s Son, Who descended from His throne and for us salvation won; By Whose cross and death are we rescued from sin’s misery.

We confess the Holy Ghost, who from both forever proceeds; Who upholds and comforts us in all trials, fears and needs. Blessed and Holy Trinity, praise forever be to Thee! (Tobias Clausnitzer, 1619-1684 tr Catharine Winkworth)

LÖHE ON ROMANS 11:34-35

nebula“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” (Rom 11:34-35 NIV)

St. Paul puts three questions – each one progressing deeper into the matter. All three questions are to be answered in the negative. Nobody has known the mind of the Lord, with which he led the various nations through history. Nobody was his counselor in determining the course of history either. Finally nobody has any merit or worthiness which God needs to repay either. His unspeakable goodness and wonderful providence are totally unwarranted and unearned by us and purely given, granted and implemented out of fatherly goodness, divine mercy and unfathomable love. His judgments are entirely righteous and he deals with us people without favoritism, yet all good, beauty and help we receive so bountifully is totally undeserved and remains utterly due to grace alone – nothing but grace, love and mercy. The apostle recognizes this and in this conviction he lauds and magnifies the name of the Lord, praising him and giving thanks to him alone.

Oh God and Father in heaven! You have revealed yourself to your congregation here on earth, that they would know and recognize your  fatherly goodness and unfathomable mercy. We thank you for your holy word by which you have revealed yourself from the early days of the apostles and prophets and you have preserved these gracious revelations throughout the generations. We pray: Grant us your Holy Spirit that he will rekindle in us your true light of knowledge and understanding, that we trust and believe your goodness more and more, hold on to your gracious gospel more fervently and be comforted ever more deeply by your promises. Oh God, speak to us through your holy word in good and bad times, in joy and sorrow, in life and death. Let it be the light, that shines on our path and leads us through all darkness into your heavenly kingdom, where we will see, what we here believe. Amen. (E. Linderholm)

All praise your works of wisdom, love, grace and strength that surpass all understanding. Faithfulness, longsuffering, light and blessing mark your ways o Lord. No praise ever sufficiently promotes your worth o God, yet you have engraved it into all your creation. Amen, Amen – we are yours too and join in your magnification: You oh God are our God alone! (Gerhard Tersteegen 1697-1769)

Neues aus der Diakonie: Altbischof Roth erhaelt Bundesverdienstkreuz

Diethard RothEhrenamtlicher Dienst gewürdigt
Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande für SELK-Altbischof Roth

Melsungen, 29.5.2013 – selk – Bundespräsident Joachim Gauck hat Bischof i.R. Dr. Diethardt Roth (Melsungen) von der Selbständigen Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche (SELK) auf Vorschlag des Hessischen Ministerpräsidenten Volker Bouffier das Verdienstkreuz am Bande des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland verliehen. Jörg-Uwe Hahn, Hessischer Minister der Justiz, für Integration und Europa und stellvertretender Ministerpräsident, wird Roth die Auszeichnung am 29. Juni in Melsungen überreichen.

LÖHE ON ROMANS 11:33B

Hours of prayerHow unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! (Rom 11:33 NIV)

Let’s consider this passage a bit longer. It’s like numerous other parts of scripture, which can not be fathomed by us in a short time – if at all. Scripture is just too deep and wide and profound to be grasped and explained by us. Obviously that does not mean that all is just dark or hazy. No, there is lots that’s to be grasped and explained, lots of light, lots of clarity, but there always remains more to be said, more to be learnt, more to be understood too. Thus even my explanations are far from being exhaustive. They touch here and there. Give a thought and motivation to more contemplation. Never giving the final  message though. Yet I am convinced that these my  meditations might prosper and promote this or that observant soul and therefore might help to strengthen faithful resolve and if it were only the insight that God’s word is very precious and most enlightening to us, who are but very insignificant and leaving a lot to desired for in wisdom and capacity. Therefore let us continue with our deliberations and think about this passage a bit more.

Here St. Paul writes about the riches of God’s wisdom and his unsearchable judgments. God’s wisdom holds all together and leads everything to his goal and final destination. In his unsearchable goodness he has revealed knowledge to us. It’s his gift to us – in varying degrees and measures. Whoever wants to recognize God, will have to follow his revealed wisdom and insight granted in the holy Scriptures of the Christian Bible in the Old and New Testaments. It shows God’s ways with Jews and pagans full of God’s justice and righteousness, divine judgments and wonderful miracles and wonders.

O God of wisdom and truthful revelation and knowledge. We admire, adore and worship your precious ways and deliberations. They are far beyond our measuring out and we can never come to their depths, heights or ends. Let us however be content in your revelation of your loving kindness and merciful grace and justice. Let us rejoice that you lead your elect from clarity to clarity until we will finally perceive what you in your gracious judgments have done for us and our salvation. We are looking forward to that time and we laud and magnify your name – even today as your delivered children and people. Amen.

The wonder’s multitude prove your capacity o Creator far beyond the limitations of nature. You have destined its laws and regulations, but you’re still Lord over all.

The wondrous greatness of your power resurrected Christ from the grave to eternal life. Thus you reveal your potent light, which enlightens our darkest night.

O almighty Lord and God, we fall before you and worship you o King of kings, Lord over life and death. Make me a witness of your creative goodness that gives life out of death. (Johann Jakob Rambach, 1693-1735)

Political comment: Breytenbach’s cleared of any wrongdoing

Breytenbach AdvCFCR WELCOMES RULING IN BREYTENBACH DISCIPLINARY HEARING

Adv Johan Kruger, Director: Centre for Constitutional Rights

The Centre for Constitutional Rights (CFCR) welcomes the ruling by a National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) disciplinary hearing which cleared senior prosecutor, Adv Glynnis Breytenbach, of any wrongdoing.

In handing down his ruling in relation to charges brought against Breytenbach by the NPA, the chairperson of the disciplinary hearing, Adv Selby Mbenenge SC, stated that “the guilt of the employee [Breytenbach] on this plethora of charges has not been proven and she can therefore not be found guilty“. Earlier this week, the NPA fastidiously explained in an unrelated media statement how and when it will prosecute someone – and when not. According to the NPA, “the existence or lack of evidence plays a critical role in the final decision“. The same criteria were apparently not applied when the NPA brought disciplinary charges against Breytenbach. In relation to the primary charge of failing to act impartially whilst investigating a matter involving a mining rights dispute between Kumba Iron Ore and Imperial Crown Trading, Mbenenge found that there was not “an iota of evidence” that Breytenbach acted improperly. Why then did the NPA continue with disciplinary measures against her with conviction?

Adv Breytenbach has always contended that her suspension and subsequent disciplinary hearing were brought about by her refusal to withdraw fraud charges against former South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence head, Richard Mdluli. In this regard, Breytenbach previously asserted that withdrawing charges against Mdluli was “preposterous” as he certainly had a prima facie case to answer to. NPA Specialised Commercial Crime Unit head, Lawrence Mrwebi, nevertheless withdrew all charges against Mdluli, even though Breytenbach was of the opinion that Mrwebi had no legal basis to do so. Both Mrwebi and acting National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Adv Nomgcobo Jiba, steadfastly denied that the Mdluli-case had been the reason for Breytenbach’s suspension and disciplinary sanction.

Incidentally, in April 2012 – shortly after Breytenbach was suspended – Adv Jiba told the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice & Constitutional Development that “It [would] be a sad day in the country if we [the NPA][took] our decisions because of political pressureThere [was] no instruction that has been given to any deputy Director of Public Prosecutions or any other person to withdraw the charges against General Mdluli“. Whether her statement was accurate will be determined by the High Court when, in the next couple of months, it will be reviewing the NPA’s decision to withdraw charges against Mdluli. However, considering a recent study by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on how the criminal justice system has been politicised under President Zuma, one may be excused for thinking that the sad day has already presented itself.

As a matter of fact, the rationality, legality and constitutionality of the NPA’s conduct – its ability to fulfil its constitutional duty without fear, favour or prejudice – are up for review in a number of matters. The Mdluli-case; withdrawal of charges against President Zuma; and the NPA’s brazen disregard of an order by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to produce its record of decision (including the controversial “spy-tapes”) which led to the withdrawal of criminal charges against President Zuma, are but a few examples justifying real concern.

At the heart of the NPA’s problems lies an issue which the Constitutional Court aptly addressed in Democratic Alliance v The President of the Republic of South Africa & Others (the case in which it upheld the SCA decision to set aside the President’s appointment of Adv Menzi Simelane as NDPP): the danger of politicising the NPA. In the latter case, the Court remarked that the NDPP “must be non-political and non-partisan… [a] non-political chief executive officer directly appointed by the President” instead of “a political appointee“. Without an NDPP with independence of mind, the NPA is at risk of being politicised. Moreover, according to the Constitutional Court, the NPA is closely related to the function of the judiciary and located at the core of delivering criminal justice“. If the NPA and the NDPP end up favouring and fearing politicians instead of the law, the judiciary is deprived of the opportunity to decide who is guilty and who is not and criminal justice fails to function without prejudice. This would leave those who should be criminally charged going free and those who question the former, being persecuted – possibly without an iota of evidence.
