Lutheran Order of service in isiZulu/seTswana
The Lutheran Order of Service for the 11th Sunday after Trinity is available here in isiZulu and seTswana. Today it comes with a sermon based on God’s word in the gospel of St. Luke the 7th chapter verses 36-50 by my Moruti T. Ratshefola (LC Mafeking, NW) in seTswana (wt1341130811 n Tr 11) and translated as usual into isiZulu (wz1341130811 n Tr 11) by my father Rev. E.A.W.Weber DD (Welbedacht, KZN).
The readings for this Sunday are:
From the Old Testament: 2.Samuel 12:1-10.13-15a
The Epistle: Ephesians 2:4-10
The Gospel: Luke 18:9-14
The liturgical colour is green.
May you have a very blessed weekend and have time to meditate on the watchword for this Sunday: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1Pe 5:5 NIV) – and if you are called to preach this weekend, may the triune God give you joy and strength, enthusiasm but also wisdom, knowledge and insight – and most of all good words and pictures to preach his holy will purely and his promises faithfully! However if you are not preaching, but listening – then listen as if God is talking to you + His precious gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Rom 1:16 NIV)
We thank the Lutheran Heritage Foundation for supporting the distribution of hard-copies of these orders of worship and sermons throughout Southern Africa. If you also want a copy please do not hesitate to subscribe by writing to EAWWeber@bundunet.co.za.
Löhe on 1. Corinthians 12:8-10
To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. (1Co 12:8-10 NIV)
The message of wisdom is mentioned as first spiritual gift, because it is the most urgently required. It is that gift of the shepherd and pastor to lead his people to eternal salvation. Therefore the second gift is the message of knowledge through which the hearer is led to truth and wisdom. Both belong to the Church and God provides both in sufficient manner too. One undergirds and supports the other. Then you get faith and the gift of healing and even miraculous powers. How is it with these gifts? Are they still there in the Church? If not, why are they not given? Did the Lord of the Church only promise them initially for the beginning stages? Does Christ’s congregation not have the same calling throughout the ages to call the unbelievers and pagans through word, but also miracles and prophecies to repentance and into faith? Is the shortage of these gifts a fault of previous generations? Perhaps so. However it is certain that the Lord deals out his precious gifts according to his pleasure and good will. Times change and he even grants the unexpected and unasked for. His miraculous fountains can pour forth at any time and place. We on our side should never falter in fervent prayers for rich measures of his gifts and miracles in and for his only holy Church.
Almighty and eternal God, you have decorated and endowed your holy Church with manifold gifts of your most holy Spirit. We pray you: Glorify yourself in our midst according to the wealth and riches of your Spirit and grant graciously that we utilize and implement your precious gifts in humble service to uplift and empower our brothers and to magnify your name through Jesus Christ your dear Son and our Lord. Amen.
Giver of grace, descend from high; Your sev’nfold gifts to us supply; Help us eternal truths receive And practice all that we believe; Give us Yourself that we may see The glory of the Trinity. (Rabanus Marus, 776-856 tr John Dryden 1631-1700)

Löhe on 1. Corinthians 12:7
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (1Co 12:7 NIV)
The apostles answers the question: Why are the spiritual gifts given? Nobody should take his gifts as a personal reward or something to be enjoyed in obscure selfishness. The Holy Spirit doesn’t serve egoism – never – even if it where cloaked in the most pious decorum. This reminds us of our Lord’s parable of the various servants, who receives different talents and where the one, who received only one talent buries it in unfaithful anxiety and loveless speculation and excuses. The one talent was taken from him and he was expelled into the darkness of the most dreadful abyss.
St. Paul also emphasizes that these spiritual gifts are for the “common good”. The Church is one body and each member has its special gift to serve the common good. It’s not for individual adoration or exultation! The Church is a community and sacred unity in which each one lives for the other in loving service and support. Every single one has the high and precious calling of service and loving care for the other and the whole. Whoever doesn’t do this, will experience these gifts as an unwholesome burden and unwanted load, will not flourish and prosper, but decay and destruction. In God’s kingdom and Church you don’t have individualists, who just serve themselves and seek their own good as you would in worldly business. No – in the Church everything serves the common good, the congregation, the holy fellowship, family, body, cooperation, partnership and union with God. Whoever serves himself only is more of a loafer and burden than anything else. Recognize this and take note!
Dear heavenly Father! We thank and praise you for all you good gifts you have endowed our bodies, minds and souls with from the bountiful goodness and kindness of your grace. We praise you that you spread your light all over the world and that you have called us too by your Holy Spirit to be witnesses of your unsurpassed goodness in this world of ours. Fill your Church with your Holy Spirit, that she remains faithful in your holy word and lives faithfully in accordance with it. Preserve respect, dignity, love for our neighbour among all people. Promote and prosper your kingdom in the big cities and rural lands. Bless all communities in your holy Church – especially the god fearing families and congregations. Preserve our congregation and Church and make them sanctuaries of your peace. Unite us with bonds of peace and caring, so that our burdens will be lighter, our joys purer and our suffering more endurable. We ask this in Jesus name, our Lord and saviour. Amen. (H. Greiner)
May God bestow on us His grace and favour To please Him with our behaviour And live as brethren here in love and union Nor repent this blessed Communion! O Lord, have mercy! Let not Thy good Spirit forsake us; Grant that heavenly minded He make us; Give Thy church, Lord, to see days of peace and unity; O Lord, have mercy! (Martin Luther 1483-1546 tr Lutheran Hymnal 1941)

You comfort me …
Jesus Christ says: Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light. (Joh 12:36 NIV – Reading John 12,20-36)
Modern people often look down on the so-called “Dark Middle Ages”, because they are quite assured of their superior enlightenment. Earlier times are perceived as having been determined by darkness due to overwhelming ignorance, whereas we are now walking in the light of knowledge and understanding. Sometimes this feeling of general advancement and subsequent superiority leads to a conviction of moral superiority too: “We are simply better!”
Jesus is talking about the true light – and obviously refers to himself. If we are sons of light, then we belong to him and then we truly are better off. He is the source of light, clarity and perspicuity. He gives very clear orientation and direction too. He reveals us divine wisdom and grants insight into the saving truth of God and his lasting salvation. The Father in heaven has granted us this gift through Jesus and his most precious gospel. Jesus Christ is the loving and helping truth of God himself. In his light all darkness and even the shadows of death disappear. Against all suffering, death and dying nothing else really helps, because we human beings are not able to address the “debt of sin” effectively. Only Jesus Christ can bring light into this darkness. He is the light and the life. Connected to him and in close communion with him, we are no longer lost in obscurity and mortality. Jesus brings clarity and direction into our lives. His presence doesn’t tolerate any dark practices of sin and the devil. His light warms our cold hearts, so that we are freed from our sinful selves and become liberated to serve our neighbour gratefully. ;
Let us listen to this admonition to remain in the invigorating, vitalizing and warming divine light of Jesus. He is still among us with his truthful light of the gospel, which is alive and active in our midst. We don’t want to put it under a pedestal or loose it even by being ungrateful or unfaithful.
Lord Jesus Christ, you are the true light and we are grateful that you have come into our lives bringing bright day and warm comfort too. Let us live gratefully in this life and grant that we remain children of your light evermore. Let us be true witnesses of your light amongst the people in this part of the world and wherever your lead and guide us. Amen.

You comfort me …
Jesus came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. (Joh 1:11 NIV) Reading: John 1,1-14
This sentence demonstrates both the sovereignty and humiliation of our Lord Jesus Christ. We can recognize both our fault and debt, but also our salvation.
It is part of our Lord’s sovereignty that all the world is his. He is the Lord of all. Just as a person reigns over his work and creation, so too our Lord Jesus Christ reigns over the universe and his people. It pleased God to call all that is into being through Jesus Christ. We human beings have received all that we have and are from him. We owe everything to his grace and mercy. We are his. He is our Lord. All glory be to him.
Then it came to pass that he visited his own. Then it became clear how his own related to him. They were not willing to accept him as Lord. That is why they humiliated him. They shamed him until they finally crucified him. His rightful claim of lordship gave rise to their ridicule. He was hit, rejected and killed. His own did not receive him. His humiliation reveals our fault. An evil rift has come about if a family no longer incorporates one of its members. How big the enmity that his own would not receive him any longer! Without him life is a lot more comfortable. Don’t we act similarly and reject Jesus and leave him standing out in the cold? Do we know our responsibility that we owe him, because we are his own? Our debt towers before us. Therefore we could not even dream of salvation and glory, had he not come for exactly that purpose – to redeem us of our liability. That is our honour, that he came to visit us and that we may belong to him. With great joy and without any fear we are allowed to draw near to him, to honour him and to confess our hope and comfort: “I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord.”
Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for your coming into this world and also to us. We are grateful for your deliverance from all our sin through your most precious and vicarious sacrifice for us and our salvation on the cross. We ask you, prepare our hearts yourself, so that we will receive you always as our Lord and saviour and gladly confess and glorify you. Amen.
