icon-resurrectionThe Most High will thunder from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (1Sa 2:10 NIV) and That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. (Eph 1:19-21 NIV)

Reading Hermann Sasse on Church and Churches.

Lonely way 1Read what Hermann Sasse wrote in 1930 about the great changes in the world and the resurgence of the faith in the one holy Christian Church: “In view of the world history which we experience we begin again to have an inkling that the meaning of all history is not to be sought in the Volk, in the “state”, or in “humanity”, not in “culture” nor even in “Christian culture”, not in “personality”, rather only in the church of God. As the church as historical reality once obtained immeasurable meaning for life during the demise of ancient culture, so in this day and age of disintegration, in which all human communities are affected and in which all orders of life threaten to go under, the church appears to be winning an entirely new meaning for all of our lives. What is the demise of ancient culture – a historical experience limited to a small area – in comparison to the revolutionary changes which find consummation in our day? … In view of this world situation Christianity awoke from its comfortable church sleep of religious individualism. It came to realize that God did not send his Son into the world that we might have beautiful religious experiences, but rather “that the world be redeemed by him” (Joh 3:17). Those who for a century had lived in the narrow boundaries of national church fellowships and in the limited horizon of solidly defined confessions began to understand anew the universality of the church. With new eyes they read the great Word of the NT concerning the church, which is the body of Christ, the struggling multitude of God in this world (Eph.6:10ff), and with new faith they spoke at their altars the old confession which is inseperably bound to the confession of faith in the Triune God: Credo unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam ecclessiam (I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church).” (Quoted from “Church and Churches. Concerning the doctrine of the unity of the church” in The Lonely Way. Selected Essays and letters. Vol.1. 1927-1939 transl. M.C. Harrison et al. CPH St.Louis: 2002. Pg. 74)

Herrenhuter readings for Monday, the 24th February 2014

karoo in die somerWhen I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. (Psa 32:3-5 NIV) You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; (Eph 4:22-23 NIV)

E.A.W.Weber DD (Welbedacht, KZN) into seTswana (wz1416140223 Seksagesime).

The Epistle:                        Hebrews 4:12-13

The Gospel:                        St. Luke 8:4-8 (9-15)

May you have a very blessed Sunday and have time to meditate on the watchword for this week: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Heb 3:15 NIV)

Collect for Sexagesima: O God, mercifully hear our prayers and having set us free from the bonds of our sins deliver us from every evil; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

If you are called to preach, may the triune God give you joy and strength, energy and wisdom, knowledge and insight – and the true words and pictures to preach his holy will faithfully according to his most precious revelation of his will and promises in both the Old and New Testament! However if you are not preaching, but listening – then listen as if God is talking to you + His precious gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Rom 1:16 NIV)

We thank the Lutheran Heritage Foundation for supporting the distribution of hard-copies of these orders of worship and sermons throughout Southern Africa. If you also want a copy please do not hesitate to subscribe by writing to mailto:eawweber@bundunet.co.za
