My wife and I are married for 25 years now. Thanks be to God. A quarter of a century ago we flew in from Germany to marry on the first weekend after Easter and on our honeymoon travelled the back roads of KZN into the backwaters of Cape Vidal, through the wild forests of Nkandla (before it hit the news – and before I had even heard of JZ) right to Enhlanhleni in the Umsinga mountains. After these initial weeks of wedded life we also travelled to Kruger with my in-laws. So 25 years later my lovely wife and I visited this happy place once again and relived memories, but gathered a whole bag of new ones too!

lling up north via Bela-Bela, Mookgophong and Mokopane we turned east around Polokwane and entered KNP at Phalaborwa. On advice of my dear sister Renate we visited the Cherry farms in Tzaneen – and enjoyed the tranquillity of autumn up in those lovely mountains. That might just be a good place for a weekend break-away, even if all the hiking and resting opportunities would encourage an even longer stay.
In the Park quite a number of animals got away. We didn’t get to see them at all or just got a glimpse of them without getting the camera set up and flashing. Some were not in focus, some remained obscured in the shadows and others were just too far in the distance. I’m thinking of the prancing leopards in the Sabi Sands or the hectic Mamba lunging at the harassing starlings. Here are some of those, that we actually could see and photograph too – even if some had already outstayed their welcome.
