Easter 2023

Jesus Christ says: “Do not be afraid! I am the first and the last, and the one who lives! I was dead, but look, now I am alive—forever and ever—and I hold the keys of death and of Hades!

Revelation 1,17f

Auferstehungsaltar in St.Marien von Lucas Cranach jr (1564)

Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia!
our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
unto Christ, our heav’nly King, Alleluia!
who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia!
our salvation have procured; Alleluia!
now above the sky he’s King, Alleluia!
where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
praise eternal as his love; Alleluia!
praise him, all ye heav’nly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

Latin (14th century) translated by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) LSB 457

Today´s Introit teaches us to pray and join in God´s praises:

The Lord gives me strength and protects me; he has become my deliverer.”
They celebrate deliverance in the tents of the godly. The Lord’s right hand conquers.
The Lord’s right hand gives victory; the Lord’s right hand conquers.
I will not die, but live, and I will proclaim what the Lord has done.
The Lord severelypunished me, but he did not hand me over to death.
Open for me the gates of the just king’s temple.
I will enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the Lord’s gate— the godly enter through it.
I will give you thanks, for you answered me, and have become my deliverer.
The stone that the builders discardedhas become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s work. We consider it amazing!
This is the day the Lord has brought about. We will be happy and rejoice in it.

Psalm 118:14-24

Let´s join Hannah in praising the triune God:

“My heart has rejoicedin the Lord; my horn has been raised high because of the Lord. I have loudly denounced my enemies. Indeed, I rejoice in your deliverance.
No one is holylike the Lord! There is no one other than you! There is no rocklike our God!
Don’t keep speakingso arrogantly. Proud talk should notcome out of your mouth, for the Lord is a God who knows; heevaluates what people do.
The bows of warriors are shattered, but those who stumbled have taken on strength.
The well fed hire themselves out to earn food, but the hungry no longer lack.
Eventhe barren woman has given birth to seven, but the one with many children has declined.  The Lord both kills and gives life; he brings down to the graveand raises up.
The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles, and he exalts.
He lifts the weak from the dust; he raises the poor from the ash heap to seat them with princes— he bestows on them an honored position. )

1. Samuel 2:1-8a

St. Paul clarifies, why he preaches the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ´s resurrection: Today´s sermon!

Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than 500 of the brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as though to one born at the wrong time, he appeared to me also. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God with me.Whether then it was I or they, this is the way we preach and this is the way you believed.

1.Corinthians 15:1-11

The holy Gospel of our Lord´s resurrection according to St. Mark:

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic spicesso that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. They had been asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled back. Then as they went into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robesitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has been raised! He is not here. Look, there is the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples, even Peter, that he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.” Thenthey went out and ran from the tomb, for terror and bewilderment had seized them. And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Mark 16:1-8

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Lord of life, Your Christ is risen, and we rejoice. Let us hold His finished work firmly in our minds, that we may remember what He has told us and continue always in the one true faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Eternal Father, Your Church has come early in the morning this first day of the week to find the body of Jesus. Grant us greater faith than those first women, that in the confidence of the resurrection we would believe His Word, receiving Him in the blessed Sacrament and proclaiming His truthfulness without hesitation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Faithful God, we have come through the season of discipline, repentance and increased devotion. May these works begun in us continue in faith, hope and love, until You bring them to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Lord, mighty God, Your power is over all things. Even death has become Your footstool. Reign over the might of man, and preserve us against all threats to peace. Give wisdom to our president, our governor, all those elected or appointed to serve our government, and all who judge or enforce the rule of law. Deliver us from pride, from the deceptions of self-sufficiency and from the use of technology without conscience or purpose. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father of our risen Lord Jesus, You have founded Your promises in His crucified and risen flesh. Fortify those who suffer in the body, [especially _____________,] that they may stand now on Your Word until they stand anew with Job and all Your resurrected saints. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord, You have offered the Passover Lamb, Your Son, Jesus Christ, to cleanse away the leaven of sin. Endow us with repentant hearts to receive His resurrected body and blood and newness of life. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

All praise to You, dear Father in heaven, for You have opened the way to eternal life by the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We give You thanks for all those who have gone before us in the faith and now rest from their labors. Keep us in that same faith, and embolden us by Your resurrection to be fearless in the face of disease, chaos, loneliness and every sorrow of this world. Give us, with Job, the solemn expectation to cheer us: our Redeemer lives, and we, too, shall be resurrected and glorified to live with Him in His eternal kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our resurrected Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
