5th Sunday after Trinity

Watchword from Ephesians

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.  (Eph 2:8)

The Introit from Psalm 73

Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever. For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works. (Verses 23-28) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be forever. Amen.

The Old Testament lesson 1st book of Moses (Genesis) the 12th chapter

 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. (Verses 1-4 This is also the sermon text)

The Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians the 14th chapter

 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (Verses 18-25)

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 5th chapter

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. (Verses 1-11)

With the Christian Church we pray a collect for the 5th Sunday after Trinity

O God, You have prepared for those who love You good things that surpass all understanding. Pour into our hearts such love toward You that we, loving You above all things, may obtain Your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Pastoral Companion 594)

Hymn for the week

1. Preis, Lob und Dank sei Gott dem Herren,
der seiner Menschen Jammer wehrt
und sammelt draus zu seinen Ehren
sich eine ewge Kirch auf Erd,
die er von Anfang schön erbauet
als seine auserwählte Stadt,
die allezeit auf ihn vertrauet
und tröst’ sich solcher großen Gnad.

2. Der Heilig Geist darin regieret,
hat seine Hüter eingesetzt;
die wachen stets, wie sich’s gebühret,
dass Gottes Haus sei unverletzt;
die führn das Predigtamt darinnen
und zeigen an das ewig Licht;
darin wir Bürgerrecht gewinnen
durch Glauben, Lieb und Zuversicht.

3. Die recht in dieser Kirche wohnen,
die werden in Gott selig sein;
des Todes Flut wird sie verschonen,
denn Gottes Arche schließt sie ein.
Für sie ist Christi Blut vergossen,
das sie im Glauben nehmen an,
und werden Gottes Hausgenossen,
sind ihm auch willig untertan.

4. Obwohl die Pforten offen stehen
und hell das Licht des Tages scheint,
kann doch hinein nicht jeder gehen,
zu sein mit Gott dem Herrn vereint.
Es ist kein Weg, denn nur der Glaube
an Jesus Christus unsern Herrn;
wer den nicht geht, muss draußen bleiben,
solang er sich nicht will bekehrn.

5. Also wird nun Gottes Gemeine,
gepflegt, erhalten in der Zeit;

Petrust Herbert (1530-1571)

If you are called to preach this weekend, may the triune God give you joy and strength, wisdom, knowledge and insight – and the true words and pictures to preach his holy will faithfully according to his most precious revelation of his will and promises in both the Old and New Testament! However if you are not preaching, but listening – then listen as if God is talking to you + His precious gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Rom 1:16 NIV)
