You have a colorful heritage w/ hunting. Even though I live in the Midwest of the US, each year we face more invasive gun laws. Your story reminded me of an Ensign used by my father for whitetail deer hunting. Its not original, but was “sporterized” circa 1960 with non-military stock. Its not pretty, but a very effective 30-06. More importantly, it was his. Enough said. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
