Löhe on Galatians 5:19-21a

christ bearing the crossThe acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. (Gal 5:19-21a NIV)

Listen to these works of the flesh. Works, that are feared only by a few, but are practiced by many – enjoyed and loved by most just as they promote them lavishly. What names, what sins, what vices and crimes! And yet so common, widespread and even popular in the Christian congregation. One could just focus on the names and try to focus on them individually. Yet, what would that serve? Who would take note of that? Who would despise them more for that? It seems more helpful to let those names stand and to ask the Holy Spirit, that he would burn them into our souls as a warning and punishment. Yes, it seems better to just briefly and succinctly point out the words. It is not my intention to withhold comfort and forgiveness from repenting sinners. Yet the many impudent and unrepentant trespassers receive no forgiveness. The greatest benefit to them are powerful, serious and punishing warnings and reprimands. Their disrespectful dedication to sin and vice will only become apparent in its entirety and perniciousness when it is already too late.

Holy God, merciful father! Teach us to be vigilant and prayerful, so that we do not consent willingly into any sin, but rather distance ourselves from them and withstand them steadfastly to preserve body and soul pure and undefiled. Let us recognize more and more vividly that your wholesome commandments show us the way to life. We commit ourselves and all that we are into your gracious guidance; keep us from all evil and lead us on your ways through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (Church book of the Palatinate 1927)

Come confess! Come confess! Come confess here at the cross. If your hope and courage leave you If you’ve caused some pain or loss, face your sin, what’s hurt and broken, Go to Christ who can forgive and bless Come confess! Come, confess. (Tr. G. Tönsing )

nebukadnezzarThe king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries.” (Dan 2:47 NIV)

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8:38-39 NIV)

Löhe on Galatians 5:18

holy-spirit-pic-0104But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Gal 5:18 NIV)

Whoever recognizes his responsibility to obey the law, but also his own weakness to fulfill it; whoever therefore accepts his own liability and worthiness to suffer the curse expressed by the law over all trespassers; whoever is unable to escape this curse and without strength for holy living; whoever is continuously heavily burdened, weighed down and troubled by this thus experiences the fearful condition of people under the law. Whoever recognizes the legal demands as responsibility and duty, follows them with passion and joy, but is not disheartened by any weakness, not put off by stumbling nor gives up his faith when he falls; whoever rejoices in good, irrespective of whether he’s successful in it or not; whoever praises the Lord for his grace and goodness if he prospers and succeeds, but also sticks to the good even if he does not; whoever is pushed by every failure to remorse and repentance, but also to greater zeal and ardor; who is not afraid punishment, because it was carried and exonerated by the Lord Jesus Christ, but is much more filled by love towards God – he is no longer under the law, but free of its coercion and curse. Oh, wouldn’t it be a blessed situation if even on earth we would not be subject to both these conditions of being under the law on the one side and free on the other too. Yet now our souls are drawn back and forth between fear and peace so that we can only confess: “The Goodness of the Lord that we have not perished!”

Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us with your help and comfort of your gracious presence as we struggle against the coercion and fear of the law. Wherever in your garden a broken reed praises you and a glowing wick gives thanks to you in your house, there spare the lowly plant and let also the lowly light find your pleasure. Comfort us with your gracious presence in our last hour and let us come from death to life. Amen.

No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now the right man comes to fight, by God himself elected. And who may this be? Christ Jesus is He. The mighty God’s son and with the Father one. He holds the field for ever. (Dr. Martin Luther)

Löhe on Galatians 5:17

walk in the wayFor the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. (Gal 5:17 NIV)

Its common experience that we humans have two voices in our inmost being. One excuses, the other condemns. However many phantasize that this inner conflict is terminated as soon as somebody is reborn and henceforth only one voice, one will and desire is determinative. Yet this is not so. Even in a reborn Christian you find the conflict between flesh and Spirit. “Flesh” is the biblical terminology for the old sinful being. “Spirit” however is God’s Spirit, who dwells in the baptized Christian and does his work there. The battle between these two is closely related if not identical to the struggle of the natural person and his conscience. Just as the person is renewed and is a new creation after his rebirth, baptism and conversion – so also the battle and struggle is also a different one. The conscience of a person is naturally unsure and not absolutely certain. That is why it transmits a certain disquiet and uneasiness, gives rise to a measure of trouble that is not easily dispelled and of which we can’t easily fathom its depth and circumference. Enlightened by the divine Spirit our conscience learns what is truly evil. The Spirit becomes active and the battle in our conscience becomes his own struggle. Hence the struggle and battle really is very similar to that experienced by unconverted persons, but it still is very different, because the Holy Spirit makes the difference. He makes it much more clear, more conscious and stronger too. Nobody is tempted and afflicted as those, who follow Jesus under the compulsion and Lordship of the Holy Spirit.

Allmighty, eternal, righteous and merciful God! Grant to us poor people that we do all that we recognize to be your will for your sake. Do give us the will to just desire what you want, so that we would be purified and sanctified within, enlightened and enflamed by your glowing Spirit to follow the footsteps of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen. (Francis of Assisi)

Watch against yourself, my soul, Lest with grace you trifle; Let not self your thoughts control Nor God’s mercy stifle. Pride and sin Lurk within, All your hopes to shatter; Heed not when they flatter.

But while watching, also pray To the Lord unceasing. God alone can make you free, Strength and faith increasing, So that still Mind and will Heartfelt praises tender And true service render. (Johann Burkhard Freystein, 1671-1718 tr Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878)

Löhe on Galatians 5:16

walk in the spiritSo I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Gal 5:16 NIV)

The battle between flesh and spirit within us rages back and forth. One is tempted to ask, whether the almighty Spirit is not able to overcome the dead flesh. Yet in this matter we people do have a certain liberty – even if it is only with a negative inclination and bias. The almighty creator has various creatures which he determines absolutely. With us human beings however he has left us with a measure of freedom and self-determination. The world on which we dwell is an imposing body for sure. Yet God’s mighty word reigns absolutely and even irresistibly on it.  How small in comparison with this world is the minuscule human being? Yet in its moral life it doesn’t take coercion freely. That really is our Lord God’s most wonderful prerogative to have created free beings besides himself. That’s what people are. If he is converted, he receives a new life. In the pedagogy through word and sacrament he gains strength of youth to do good. Yet if he resists this, he remains what he is. Therefore don’t resist. Let the Spirit rule. He’ll rejuvenate – yes more that that, he’ll recreate you as Christ’s new creation. Use this new vigour and drive eagerly. Lying fallow it falls into disrepair and may even get lost again. Awaken the gift that is in you. The victory will surely follow – and victory after victory. The apostle would not admonish the Galatians to walk by the Spirit if that was not possible by divine encouragement and input.

Oh exulted Lord and God! You give us your Holy Spirit as a sure guide and comforter, so that he would daily encourage, comfort, teach and reprimand us in his most holy Word. Awaken our ears that we would hear clearly. Grant us hearts to trust in you completely. Rule our thoughts and minds that we would faithfully obey you and your instructions. In all uncertainty guide us safely, in despondency revive and restore us, in rebellion convert  us and let our ways be your ways and help us out from the unrest in this time to the peace and joy in joy there. Amen. (Hermann Bezzel)

I teach you how to shun and flee What harms your soul’s salvation, Your heart from every guile to free, From sin and its temptation. I am the Refuge of your soul And lead you to your heavenly goal. (Johann Scheffler, 1624-1677 tr Charles Schaeffer, 1813-1896)
