Löhe on Philippians 3:19

efigyTheir destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. (Phi 3:19 NIV)

The enemies of Christ’s cross have minds set on earthly things. By side-lining the cross with a legalistic mind-set, the so-called Judaizers maintain their life outside the exclusive realm of grace and forgiveness. They were not exclusively founded on God’s gracious forgiveness, but also held onto their Jewish way’s and traditional legalisms as further pillars of salvation and of their unique status before God. They propagated the traditional Jewish way of life as the real thing even for those gentile Christians, who were have been converted to faith in Christ from paganism. St. Paul argues that they are thus promoting their own tradition, this worldly thing of contextual identity as something universally valid and imperative and necessary requirement for salvation. One could imagine that this faithful commitment to the law of ones people could have some higher and even sublime motivation, which would demand respect and acknowledgement from outsiders. However the apostle does not share this view. On the contrary, he finds strong words to disqualify this legalistic approach: “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.” Why therefore should this old legalistic way of life be conserved and even be promoted? St. Paul assumes that it is to keep ones office, occupation and livelihood to ultimately take care of ones stomach. You don’t want to lose your status amongst those, who have always shared this perspective on life with you. However that ultimately is destructive and the end is shameful.

We bow before you almighty God, merciful Father of our Lord Jesus Christ – You have empowered your children to live faithfully, to escape vanity and to be sanctified in your truth. Dwell in our hearts o Lord. Let us realize the ultimate good that we have in you. Grant that holy deeds will come to fruition, sanctify, bless and complete your holy Word in us through the indwelling of your most precious Holy Spirit. Amen. (Hermann Bezzel)

Come, Holy Spirit, God and Lord, Be all Thy graces now outpour’d On the believer’s mind and soul, And touch our hearts with living coal. Thy Light this day shone forth so clear, All tongues and nations gather’d near To learn that faith, for which we bring Glad praise to Thee, and loudly, loudly sing, ||:Hallelujah, Hallelujah!:||

Thou Strong Defence, Thou Holy Light, Teach us to know our God aright, And call Him Father from the heart: The Word of life and truth impart, That we may love not doctrines strange, Nor e’er to other teachers range, But Jesus for our Master own, And put our trust in Him, in Him alone. Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

Thou Sacred Ardour, Comfort Sweet, Help us to wait with ready feet And willing heart at Thy command, Nor trial fright us from Thy band. Lord, make us ready with Thy powers, Strengthen the flesh in weaker hours, That as good warriors we may force Through life and death to Thee, to Thee our course. Hallelujah, Hallelujah!  (Martin Luther 1483-1546)

Löhe on Philippians 3:18

IX weint ueber JerusalemFor many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: (Phi 3:18 KJV)

Let’s look once more at this apostolic statement. St. Paul warns unwaveringly and seriously, ongoing and often, because the enemies of Jesus Christ’s cross endanger those they influence and threaten to pull them down into perdition if they too despise the way to salvation by becoming enemies of the cross. They are bound for destruction and will draw others down with them – rather than seeing them be saved to live eternally. That’s why St. Paul warns adamantly and will not stop. We can read how more than once he warns the Philippians. Now he does so under tears and with great emotion. This was no angry revenge or some case of sour grapes. No, St. Paul was motivated by heartfelt love for his congregation and the Church, but also for those mislead and lost – even if they are obstinate, full of guilt and lack any bit of remorse or repentance. His tears are like those his master and Lord Jesus Christ shed outside of Jerusalem, when he saw, how few inhabitants of that city were intent on those things that served true peace. Even while St. Paul is mourning on account and on behalf of these hard-hearted enemies of Jesus’ cross – they accuse him most harshly and fiendishly of being extremist and a religious fanatic, whereas they claim to be moderate, tolerant and main-stream in the spirituality of the day.

Almighty God, merciful Father – you have brought out light from the darkness. We thank you most heartily, that you have been mercifully towards us and have rekindled the light of your most gracious gospel. We plead you: Preserve and keep us in your pure and wholesome doctrine, that we would live holy according to your word as your faithful children. For Jesus Christ sake, he our saviour and Lord. Amen. (Sächsische Agende 1906)

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day. Ye that are brave now serve Him against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To those who vanquish evil a crown of life shall be; They with the King of Glory shall reign eternally. (George Duffield Jr 1818-1888)

Political comment by Max du Preez: Zanu-PF style or what?

malemaToday Max du Preez wrote the following comments on the new Economic Freedom Fighters, who are causing somewhat of a stir with their slogans and threats. He titles his Tuesday column: “The redistribution of poverty Zanu-PF style” – and this is what he writes:

“If I thought the Economic Freedom Fighters would bring about more social justice and real economic freedom to the economically un-free, I would join them tomorrow. Like many other South Africans, I’m looking for a progressive alternative to the ANC to give my vote to in 2014. A party that would draft a new pact between government and governed, between public and private sector, a party that would deepen our democracy, advance our freedoms and bring real hope to the marginalized.

When Julius Malema launched the EFF, I thought it was a bit of a joke. How could the country’s foremost tenderpreneur, a crass political hooligan who became a millionaire and lived like a gangster boss on a meager ANC salary, pose as the champion of the poor? I wasn’t surprised when Malema was joined by fellow exhibitionist Kenny Kunene and by Andile Mngxitama, the black version of Steve Hofmeyr. Their utterances and those of their followers on social media reflected a toxic mix of racial hatred, cheap populism, greed and political thuggery.

But then someone I know from my hometown, South Africa’s most successful home-based international movie star, joined the EFF as member of its leadership: Fana Mokoena. I know Fana as a man deeply concerned with social justice and angry at the continued inequalities in our society.
Fana may be an angry man, but he is not an attention seeker or a political thug. And unlike most in the EFF leadership, he is a democrat.
There must be other Fana Mokoenas in the EFF fold. Essentially decent people who feel it is time for a new deal, a radical change in how the ANC had dealt with empowerment, poverty and unemployment.
By the way, the EFF’s latest acquisition, Dali Mpofu, is not one of those. He has a long record of mismanagement of public institutions and of milking taxpayers’ money to fund his lavish lifestyle. (Malema himself, when he was still leader of the ANC Youth League, demanded his resignation as SABC head, saying he was running the SABC “like a spaza shop”.)
Mpofu is as fake a revolutionary as Malema himself. After his R13,4 million SABC payout and the vast amounts he received for representing the Marikana miners at the Farlam commission, he went on an aggressive fundraising campaign to pay for his continued participation at the commission. If he was the kind of man who truly believed in what the EFF says it stands for, he would have lowered his daily rate significantly or even appeared pro bono, at least for a while.
I have not had the opportunity to ask my friend Fana how he justifies his association with Malema and EFF. Perhaps it is time for us to ask those decent men and women now with the EFF a few questions instead of just writing them off or calling them names.
I hear some EFF members say, when questioned on the highly questionable character of their leader, that it is “not about individuals” but about policy. Come on, if there was no Malema with his reckless talk and media savvy there would be no EFF. If the EFF did get 5 percent or more of the vote next year, it would be because of him.
I would like to ask Fana if he wasn’t bothered by the crude racism coming from EFF leaders like Malema and Mngxitama. Speak the truth without fear, yes, but dangerous insults and threats of civil war?
What’s with the military style uniforms, berets and use of titles like “commander” and “commissar” in EFF, Fana? Is EFF a political party or some wannabe militia? You guys remind me of the fascist nationalist splinter groups in Serbia, Russia, Chechnya and the American backwater.
Do you really think seizing all agricultural land is a solution or is it just a crude slogan? No more long-term planning or investment in agricultural infrastructure, a loss of most successful commercial farmers, a guaranteed steep drop in the production of food and employment?
Let’s talk about a greater state involvement in the economy, public/private partnerships and worker share options. But large-scale nationalization of mines, banks and industries while the state is so corrupt and unable to manage education, health, the SABC, etc.? When you talk about the redistribution of wealth, you actually mean the redistribution of poverty.
The EFF says Robert Mugabe is its hero, the “true African liberator”. But to “liberate” Zimbabweans, a third of his people had to flee the country. Where would 15 million South Africans flee to when we go through the same process?
I would have thought African pride should mean more than just punishing the white “settlers” and destroying the economy and ordinary people’s rights in the process. Making South Africa prosper and grow and making sure the poor and the working class benefit from that; restoring human dignity to all should be the goals we should campaign for.
The EFF is really trying to be a local version of Zanu-PF. I don’t think you belong there, Fana.

Löhe on Philippians 3:18

Kreuzigung IX Gruenewald 1515

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. (Phi 3:18 KJV)

If the apostle St. Paul would have called his enemies foes of humanity it would not have been as terrible as his stipulation: “enemies of the cross of Christ”. This cross is the place where the righteous died for the unrighteous. The Lord suffered there so that we would be freed of sin, death and devil. From this cross the new life sprouted, the very life that had once been lost in Paradise by our own fault, our own most grievous fault. That is why this ugly, harsh cross is so commendable to all e all are to truly venerate it.

Now why does the Apostle warn us so insistently against the enemies of Jesus’ cross? Since the suffering, dying and death of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross there have always been those, who despise him and that cross too. They hate it – literally. In St. Paul’s time there was the party called the “enemies of the cross”. They were friends of the law and they wanted to keep that law high and in honour as pathway to heaven and eternal salvation. Not just the vicarious suffering and death of Jesus on the cross, but also some legalistic strappings, rules and regulations. Yet this was stealing some of the honour and hiding some of the glory of Jesus’ cross and sacrificial death. Here – as always – our Lord Jesus Christ is very exclusive. It’s him alone. Nothing else. Every little subtraction is too much detraction.  Every little addition is too much. It would dull his solitary glory. Its dangerous and harmful if something else pushes the cross from centre stage. Any side-lining is detrimental. Night and darkness falls on those, who loose sight and faith of the one on the cross – our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ +

Lord Jesus Christ: Your word of the cross is tough stuff for all, who don’t know themselves nor their sinful dire straits. Those too clever think it is foolhardy, whereas the self-righteous reject its accurate accusation angrily.   Yet for us, who recognize you as our saviour and helper it remains the power of God, which saves, redeems and justifies us. Let it carry us through this world and life creating in us plentiful good fruit for the eternal harvest. Amen.

When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. (Isaac Watts, 1674-1748)

Löhe on Philippians 3:17

communion-of-saintsBrethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (Phi 3:17 KJV)

It’s obvious to all the world how bad corrupting influences are. Yet there are many, who would limit us to the singular example of Jesus Christ as the best one there is. I don’t know, why they want to restrict us in this way. Why should we not also follow the good example of those Christians, who are suitable for this role of exemplary leadership? St. Paul calls his congregation in Philippi to follow his example. Another apostolic admonition to the Church is from the letter to the Hebrews: Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith (Heb 13:7 NIV). These two verses should prove the point that this is right and good to follow good Christian examples. And then we also have the big cloud of witnesses, this wonderful list of glorious saints from Church History throughout the very early and foundational ages. Test everything with clear and sober mind – and if you do find a good and faithful example – then follow faithfully too. Sure – nobody is perfect. Sure – even the saints are but forgiven sinners. We are not following lifeless ideals or theoretical constructs. However the Lord and God of the Church – Jesus Christ himself – by his grace and mercy, his love and patience – has gifted his Church with bright and shining examples from all nations, ages and places. So let us discard those misleading proponents of false doctrine and faithless lifestyles as hopeless and vain – and let us follow diligently and most faithfully those lovely friends, forgiven saints and shining examples of Christ’s living Church in true faith, love and hope.

God and Father! In reverence and gratitude we look up to you for carrying your Church throughout the Ages. You have blessed and kept her in good and bad days. You have given the good news of your Son Jesus Christ into our hearts and thus led us to truth and freedom. In all sorts of storms and severe calamities and disasters you have preserved your Church miraculously. You have made her a blessing and sanctuary for countless people from all nations. Through her faithful proclamation you have filled the hearts of those tired and heavily burdened with joy, courage and peace so that they have been empowered to proclaim your truth before kings and the mighty powers of this world, but also in the daily encounters of their common calling you have made them truthful and winsome witnesses of your gospel. Oh, how unworthy we ourselves are of this glorious company of faithful witnesses! We have erred, we have been weak and our stubbornness is too hard – yet, you are still greater by far in your loving mercy o Lord. Always again you have forgiven us. You have strengthened us and you gifted us with peace and comfort. We thank you for this from the bottom of our heart. Bless us in the remembrance of the true cornerstone of your Church – Jesus Christ our living Lord. Enliven in us the remembrance of those holy martyrs of the Church, who worked and strove in his name and Spirit throughout the world and all ages. They suffered in living hope and remained faithful to the very end – even while building your Church. Remind us that we too are living stones of your Church and that we too are to be joyfully and faithful members of your Congregation here on earth – praising and glorifying you and working for the benefit those, who need it most.   Amen. (Liturgisches Arbeitsgemeinschaft Hannover 1930)
