Löhe on Romans 13:12

dawnThe night is far spent, the day is at hand. (Rom 13:12a KJV)

The apostle calls paganism, heathenism and idolatry “night”. Everything that tries to fill our hearts and souls with something else than the living God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is “night”. Just as everything that tries to posit something instead of God’s holy Word as true, right and salutary is but “night”. The people, who have recognized the coming light in Jesus Christ and also his opposition as “night”, have never been the overwhelming majority of any population. They remain a precious minority as it is just by grace if somebody is called from the night into the day. Why is this like that especially if the time of godlessness is passing and the glorious time of Christ’s visible reign is drawing near? It is mainly because the time is not recognized for what it is. Because people prefer the darkness and night over and above the light and day of the living God. Because the revelation of God’s divine will through his word in the old and new Testament are ignored, if not despised and people close their eyes before the bright light of the heavenly truth. Salvation is truly meant for everyone. Let us recognize it for what it is. Let us not oppose it, but rather accept that the time has come to arise from sleep, to turn our backs on godlessness and faithlessness, rather dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly towards obeying our God’s holy commands and putting our trust entirely in his beautiful promises. Amen.

Eternal God, heavenly Father! We give you thanks for the saving gospel of your Son Jesus Christ, who has been gracious to us and has forgiven us all our sins and iniquities. You have entrusted this gospel to your congregation and Church here on earth, blessing it thus without measure. Grant wisdom and strength to your servants and people, that they proclaim your salvation joyfully and with conviction. Call those, who are still far off, asleep in the night of sin and shadow’s of death. Grant that they will wake up, bow their knees before you and worship him, who comes as Lord and God of all: Jesus Christ! Strengthen the weak. Comfort the mourning. Grant faithful victory to those struggling. Preserve the faithful. Prepare us all for a blessed death – especially those, whom you will call next. O God of peace, sanctify us through and through, so that our Spirit, body and soul might be found blameless until the day of your Son Jesus Christ! Amen. (Agenda of the old Prussian Agenda, 1931)

  1. The night will soon be ending; The dawn can not be far. Let sons of praise ascending Now greet the Morning Star! All you whom darkness frightens With guilt or grief or pain, God’s radiant Star now brightens And bids you sing again.
  2. Yet nights will bring their sadness And rob our hearts of preace, And sin in all its madness Around us may increase. But now one Star is beaming Whose rays have pierced the night: God comes for our redeeming From Sin’s oppressive might.
  3. God dwells with us in darkness And makes the night as day; Yet we resist the brightness And turn form God away. But grace does not forsake us, However far we run. God claims us still as children Through Mary’s infant Son. (Jochen Klepper, 1903-1942 tr Herman G. Stuempfle jr 1923)

Löhe on Romans 13:11

1 AdventAnd that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. (Rom 13:11 KJV)

Today is the start of Advent. It is reminding us: Take heed of the time. The return of Christ is much closer than it was during the apostle’s lifetime. That was the early dawn preceding the coming day, when people start to wake from the sleep. Our time however is the late morning, when everybody is wide awake and going about their daily chores. The day of our Lord Jesus Christ and his accompanying salvation has come closer by 1900 years (today it’s 2000 years already WW). That’s why the watchmen on the lookout up on the buttresses need to call even more urgently: Soon the time has come, when preparation is overdue. It’s high time already. The sun has risen. Noonday is at hand. The world is nearing its consummation. It’s a critical time, critical years, critical Advent. This Advent wants to prepare us to be ready for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ in glory. Amen.

Dear Lord God, awaken us up, so that we’ll be ready, when your Son Jesus Christ appears in glory. Grant that we will welcome him with joy and gladness as we continue to serve you with pure and faithful hearts. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

1.    Rise, my soul, to watch and pray; From your sleep awaken; Be not by the evil day Unawares over taken. Satan’s prey Oft are they Who secure are sleeping And no watch are keeping.

2.    Watch against the world that frowns Darkly to dismay you; Watch when it your wishes crowns, Smiling to betray you. Watch and see, You are free From false friends who charm you While they seek to harem you.

3.    Watch against yourself, my soul, Lest with grace you trifle; Let not self your thoughts control Nor God’s mercy stifle. Pride and sin Lurk within, All your hopes to shatter; Heed not when they flatter.

4.    But while watching, also pray To the Lord unceasing. God alone can make you free, Strength and faith increasing, So that still Mind and will Heartfelt praises tender And true service render. (J.B. Freystein, 1671-1718 tr Catharine Winkworth 1827-1878)

Löhe on 2. Thessalonians 1:10

das_juengste_gerichtOn that day Jesus Christ, the Lord comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. (2Th 1:10 NIV)

Yes, Jesus Christ, the Lord and King of kings is coming from the heavens. He came from the earth and will return to the earth. He left the earth to make all heavens his own. He’s returning to earth to make it entirely his own too and to make it his residence and abode of eternal glory. He’s coming home and returning into his own. He’ll cleanse it, like he did with the temple in Jerusalem ages ago. He’ll carry out this mission and remain with his people forever. Until then we lift our eyes and look out for him constantly. Then however we will fix our eyes on him alone – our Lord and Saviour.

Is he coming alone or with company? He’s coming in the accompaniment of all his angels and he does so “to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed.” This surely is going to be the most glorious occasion ever – just as the destruction of the evil ones is going to be the most frightful and terrible too. All this is coming soon and it will affect us – either for good or for ill. Therefore be alert and awake and continue to pray: Lord, have mercy on us for Christ’s sake! Amen.

Lord, we are waiting for your eternal kingdom. We are waiting for the new earth and the new heavens that you are about to create in righteousness and holiness. We are waiting for the future city of God, in which we will find no suffering, no harm or crying, and death will be swallowed by victory and glory. Lord, come and end all injustice and sinfulness, all violence and suffering, all pain, illness and dying. Strengthen the little faith in us that we trust the coming of your holy kingdom. Build and expand hope in our hearts, we that are tired, close to despair and giving up. Grow love in our hearts and make it flourish vigorously so that we would strengthen each other, support and help each other on the way. Lord, grant that we prepare your way appropriately and let your kingdom come to us and soon. Amen. (Mecklenburg-Schwerinsches Church Book 1927)

Rise, my soul, to watch and pray, from thy sleep awaken; Be not by the evil day unawares be taken. For the foe, well we know, oft his harvest reapeth, While the Christian sleepeth.

Watch against the devil’s snares lest asleep he find thee; For indeed no pains he spares to deceive and blind thee. Satan’s prey oft are they who secure are sleeping And no watch are keeping.

Watch! Let not the wicked world with its power defeat thee. Watch lest with her pomp unfurled she betray and cheat thee. Watch and see lest there be faithless friends to charm thee, Who but seek to harm thee.

Watch against thyself, my soul, lest with grace thou trifle; Let not self thy thoughts control nor God’s mercy stifle. Pride and sin lurk within all thy hopes to scatter; Heed not when they flatter.

But while watching, also pray to the Lord unceasing, He will free thee, be thy Stay, strength and faith increasing. O Lord, bless in distress and let nothing swerve me From the will to serve Thee. (Johann Burghard Freystein 1671-1718 tr Catharine Winkworth, 1827-1878)

Löhe on 2. Thessalonians 1:8-9

Last judgementHe will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might (2Th 1:8-9 NIV)

This is like a mighty storm going over the face of the world. The terrible revenge of our Lord over those, who do not obey and believe his gospel, is to serve as a dire warning for all of us. Although God did not spare any trouble to get us ready and prepared, we are too often blatantly ignorant and even derisive of his most holy will and blessed expectations. In the ancient Greek Church the deacon would call out before the Lord’s Supper: “Look up to the sun rising!”  Who knows, how soon our Lord Jesus Christ will return again? What an expectation and anticipation! We have all reason to wake up from the sleep and to strive for that which serves everlasting peace. We should work on ourselves and also warn those on the way with us. God is still working in all of us. It’s still time of grace. It’s still time for repentance and turn-around. May he grant us his blessed hope and keep us from the terrors of his righteous judgements!  Amen.

Lord, heavenly God! Nothing is hidden before your eyes. You give to each one as they deserve and according to their works and the fruit of their doing. We plead with you: Wake us up from sinful sleep and make us alert and attentive for your holy will and law. Grant that we pray constantly and remain faithful stewards of your gifts and talents. Give to us peace and eternal life through your son Jesus Christ, our Lord and saviour. Amen. (Dr. Martin Luther)

1. Saints, see the cloud of witnesses surround us; Their lives of faith encourage and astound us. Hear how the Master praised their faith so fervent: “Well done, My servant!”

2.  These saints of old received God’s commendation; They lived as pilgrim-heirs of His salvation. Through faith they conquered flame and sword and gallows, God’s name to hallow.

3.  They call to us, “Your timid footsteps lengthen; Throw off sin’s weight, your halting weakness strengthen. We kept the faith, we shed our blood, were martyred; Our lives we bartered.”

4.  Come, let us fix our sight on Christ who suffered, He faced the cross, His sinless life He offered; He scorned the shame, He died, our death enduring, Our hope securing.

5.  Lord, give us faith to walk where You are sending, On paths unmarked, eyes blind as to their ending; Not knowing where we go, but that You lead us– With grace precede us.

6.  You, Jesus, You alone deserve all glory! Our lives unfold, embraced within Your story; Past, present, future–You, the same forever– You fail us never! (Stephen P. Starke, b 1955)
