Great expectations for Epiphany

St Berhard preaching“Every Sunday morning when it comes ought to find you awed and thrilled by the reflection: “God is to be in action today, through me, for these people: this day may be crucial, this service decisive, for someone now ripe for the vision of Jesus.” Remember that every soul before you has its own story of need, and that if the gospel of Christ does not meet such need nothing on earth can. Aim at results. Expect mighty works to happen. Realize that, although your congregation may be small, every soul is infinitely precious. Never forget that Christ himself, according to his promise, is in the midst, making the plainest and most ordinary church building into the house of God and the gate of heaven. Hear his voice saying: “This day is the Scripture fulfilled in your ears. This day is salvation come to this house.” Then preaching, which might otherwise be a dead formality and a barren routine, an implicit denial of its own high claim, will become a power and a passion; and the note of strong, decisive reality, like a trumpet, will awaken the souls of men.” (James S.Stewart pg. 398 Dobberstein: Minister’s Prayer Book)

BambergApocalypse WorshipBeforeThroneOfGodRise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance. (Psa 82:8 NIV) and after this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” (Rev 7:9-10 NIV)

Lutheran Order of Service in Zulu and Tswana

christcalmsthestorm2The Lutheran Order of Service for the 4th Sunday after the Holiday of Epiphany (6th January) is available here in isiZulu and seTswana. Today it comes with a sermon based on God’s word from Genesis chapter 8 the verses 1-12 written by Rev. K-G Tiedemann (Germany) in isiZulu (wz1413140202 Epi 4) and translated as usual by my father Rev. E.A.W.Weber DD (Welbedacht, KZN) into seTswana (wt1413140202 Epi 4)

The readings for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany are:

Old Testament:                 Isaiah 51:9-16

The Epistle:                       2. Corinthians 1:8-11

The Gospel:                       St. Mark 4:35-41

The liturgical colour is green.

May you have a very blessed Sunday and have time to meditate on the watchword for this fourth Sunday after Epiphany: Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind! (Psa 66:5 NIV)

Collect for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany: Almighty God, You know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright. Grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

If you are called to preach, may the triune God give you joy and strength, enthusiasm and wisdom, knowledge and insight – and the true words and pictures to preach his holy will faithfully according to his most precious revelation of his will and promises in both the Old and New Testament! However if you are not preaching, but listening – then listen as if God is talking to you + His precious gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Rom 1:16 NIV)

That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. (Luk 7:6-7 NIV)
