Lutheran order of the divine service in isiZulu and seTswana.

christ_is_light_of_the_world_by_scottmcdaniel-d572le4The Lutheran Order of Service for the 18th Sunday after Trinity is available here in isiZulu and seTswana. Today it comes with a sermon based on God’s word from Ephesians 5:15-21 by late father in the faith Rev. N.A. Ntuli + in isiZulu (wz1452141019 n Tr 18) and translated as usual into seTswana (wt1452141019 n Tr 18) by my father Rev. E.A.W.Weber DD (Welbedacht, KZN).

The readings for this 18th Sunday after Trinity are:

Old Testament:       Exodus 20:1-17

The Epistle:            Romans 14:17-19

The Gospel:            St. Mark 12:28-34

Psalm:                    122:2-3.7.9

The liturgical colour is green.

May you have a very blessed weekend and have time to meditate on the watchword for this 18th Sunday after Trinity: And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (1Jo 4:21 KJV)

Dear Father in heaven, you have revealed your love to us in Jesus Christ. Grant us your Holy Spirit, that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

If you are called to preach this weekend, may the triune God give you joy and strength, enthusiasm and wisdom, knowledge and insight – and the true words and pictures to preach his holy will faithfully according to his most precious revelation of his will and promises in both the Old and New Testament! However if you are not preaching, but listening – then listen as if God is talking to you + His precious gospel is “the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Rom 1:16 NIV)

We thank the Lutheran Heritage Foundation for supporting the distribution of hard-copies of these orders of worship and sermons throughout Southern Africa. If you also want a copy please do not hesitate to subscribe by writing to EAWWeber@bundunet.co.za.

Great Captain: Fight for us once again!

  1. ship_sailing_revO little flock, fear not the Foe Who madly seeks your overthrow; Dread not his rage and power. What though your courage sometimes faints, His seeming triumph o’er God’s saints Lasts but a little hour.
  2. Be of good cheer; your cause belongs To Him who can avenge your wrongs; Leave it to Him, our Lord. Though hidden yet from mortal eyes, His Gideon shall for you arise, Uphold you and His Word.
  3. As true as God’s own Word is true. Not earth nor hell with all their crew Against us shall prevail. A jest and byword are they grown; God is with us, we are His own; Our victory cannot fail.
  4. Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer; Great Captain, now Thine arm make bare, Fight for us once again! So shall Thy saints and martyrs raise A mighty chorus to Thy praise, World without end.

There was a time, when we quoted this hymn jokingly. Now, decades later, I resent and repent of this foolhardiness on my part. Singing this hymn in the German original by Johann M. Altenburg, 1632  with old man Voges on Monday night together with my wife and children, reminded of changing fortunes and times in the world and also the church, which are under heavy attack from the conquered foe, and how all in all is focussed on God’s victory attained in Jesus Christ and to be culminated and made visible at his 2nd coming in glory to judge the living and the dead – even if we don’t see or feel it yet. Let us therefore take courage in his promise and faithfulness and not despair amidst all calamities, assaults and vanities of our time. He our Captain will surely prevail and carry us through to see, what we have here believed.

Jesus answers Johns disciples“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isa 43:18-19 ESV) Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
