1st Sunday in Lent: Invocavit (Temptation)

Joos de Momper (II) – Landscape with the Temptation of Christ

For this purpose the Son of God was revealed: to destroy the works of the devil.

1. John 3,8b

Introit

As for you, the one who lives in the shelter of the Most High,
and resides in the protective shadow of the Sovereign One—
I say this about the Lord, my shelter and my stronghold,
my God in whom I trust— he will certainly rescue you from the snare of the hunter
and from the destructive plague.
He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings.
His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall.
You need not fear the terrors of the night, the arrow that flies by day,
the plague that stalks in the darkness, or the disease that ravages at noon.
Though a thousand may fall beside you, and a multitude on your right side,
it will not reach you.
Certainly you will see it with your very own eyes— you will see the wicked paid back.
For you have taken refuge in the Lord, my shelter, the Most High.
No harm will overtake you; no illness will come near your home.
For he will order his angels to protect you in all you do.
They will lift you up in their hands, so you will not slip and fall on a stone.
You will subdue a lion and a snake; you will trample underfoot a young lion and a serpent.
The Lord says, “Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him because he is loyal to me. When he calls out to me, I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him honor.
I will satisfy him with long life, and will let him see my salvation.”

Psalm 91

Collect

O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the people of your church that following our saviour we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

Now the serpent was shrewder than any of the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Is it really true that God said, ‘You must not eat from any tree of the orchard’?”The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit from the trees of the orchard;but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, ‘You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, or else you will die.’” The serpent said to the woman, “Surely you will not die, for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will open and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God moving about in the orchard at the breezy time of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the orchard. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” The man replied, “I heard you moving about in the orchard, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” And the Lord God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”The man said, “The woman whom you gave me, she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it.”So the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman replied, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”

The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all the cattle
and all the living creatures of the field!
On your belly you will crawl
and dust you will eat all the days of your life.
And I will put hostility between you and the woman
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

To the woman he said,

“I will greatly increase your labor pains;
with pain you will give birth to children.
You will want to control your husband,
but he will dominate you.”

 But to Adam he said,

“Because you obeyed your wife
and ate from the tree about which I commanded you,
‘You must not eat from it,’
the ground is cursed because of you;
in painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
but you will eat the grain of the field.
By the sweat of your brow you will eat food
until you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust, and to dust you will return.”

The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments from skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. And the Lord God said, “Now that the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not be allowed to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”So the Lord God expelled him from the orchard in Eden to cultivate the ground from which he had been taken. When he drove the man out, he placed on the eastern side of the orchard in Eden angelic sentries who used the flame of a whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

Genesis (1. Mose) 3,1-24

Epistle

Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.

Hebrews 4,14-16

Gospel

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he fasted forty days and forty nights he was famished.

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

”Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you throw yourself to the ground and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to his needs.

Matthew 4,1-11

The Christian Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Lutheran Hymn

God the Father, be our stay and let us perish never!
Cleanse us from our sins, we pray, and grant us life forever.
Keep us from the evil one; uphold our faith most holy,
and let us trust you solely with humble hearts and lowly.
Let us put God’s armor on, with all true Christians running
our heav’nly race and shunning the devil’s wiles and cunning.
Amen, amen! This be done; so sing we, “O Lord, have mercy on us.”

Jesus Christ, O be our stay and let us perish never!

Holy Spirit, be our stay and let us perish never!

My sermon

Prayer for the church and for all people

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Almighty God, You stand ever ready to receive the prayers of Your children. Since we have so great a mediator in Christ, make our hearts eager to cry out, knowing we will find grace to help in time of need. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O God, our shield and our weapon against the evil one, grant us safe haven within the walls of Your Church, and embolden our witness in the world as we receive Your Holy Word and proclaim it with our lives. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, our first parents fell into sin, rebelled against You and despised one another. Inspire the families of Your Church to live in sacrificial love toward one another and in faith toward You, that they may receive Your temporal and eternal benediction. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

O Lord, since we sojourn in the wilderness of this earth, look upon our desire for peace, and by Your mighty power defend us and our nation against all our enemies. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God of Sabaoth, send Your holy angels to protect and keep us in Your ways, that no evil may befall us. Graciously behold the needy, the sick and the troubled [especially Thomas, Helmut, Annette, Paulina, Ruth, Christoph, June, Ingrid, Karin, Michaela, Sylvia, Michael & Janet]. Satisfy us with long life, and show us Your salvation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious Lord, You covered the shame of our first parents with animal skin and thereby foreshadowed the perfect sacrifice of Your Son’s blood by which we are cleansed and clothed. Give us the garments of repentance and faith, that we may receive Your Son’s body and blood for the forgiveness of all our sins. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord of hosts, Your servant David opposed Goliath with faith in Your deliverance. Christ, the Son of David, overcame the devil for our sake. Instill in us a spirit of prayer and holy discipline daily to trample the tempter underfoot. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, heavenly Father, see how the adversary continually afflicts us and walks about as a roaring lion seeking to devour us. We implore You for the sake of the suffering and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, help us by the grace of the Holy Spirit and strengthen our hearts by Your Word, that our enemy would not prevail over us, but instead that we may abide  evermore in Your grace and be preserved to life everlasting; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

+ Dominum vobiscum +

The Lord bless You, and keep You; The Lord make His face shine upon You, and be gracious unto You; The Lord lift up His countenance upon You + give You peace.

Numbers 6,24-26

If you are called to preach this weekend, may the holy, triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the one true and only God give You His rich measure of faith, hope, love, joy and strength, wisdom, knowledge and insight, clarity of speech, that You preach His holy Will faithfully and His gracious Promises invitingly and faithfully according to His biblical Word recorded by apostles and prophets. His most precious Gospel grants saving grace. It is His “power to save.” (Rom 1:16 cf. 2.Corinthians 12,9).

God´s Word and Luther´s teaching remain forever.

+ Amen +
