Two kingdoms cooperate to build this Lutheran school

Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me.

Proverbs 27,11

In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Colossians 2,3

In the year of the Lord 1564 in the month of July, the construction of this school was begun, during the time of the most illustrious Prince of Saxony, August, Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, who governed this land and gave his support to this building when Dr. Paul Eber of Kitzingen was pastor of this church and Thomas Heiliger was mayor of this town.

“These two bible verses are a summary of the core message of biblical quotations painted on the building facade in black letters in 1565 by Anthonius Lange. In 1702 new plaster was applied and covered this writing. It is still unclear who selected the texts, which describe Christ as the source of wisdom and point to the responsibility of education that be deduced from Scriptures: Elector August, Heilinger, Cranach, Eber or his colleagues at the Leucorea or other intellectuals from the Wittenberg book trade. Thankfully, the inscriptions, lost in 1702, were preserved by Balthasar Menz and Gottfried Suevus and can partly be found in the commemorate publication of 1888, printed on the occasion of the new Melanchthon-Gymnasium´s inauguration.” (Dr. Insa Christiane Hennen: “The School Building in Wittenberg in the years 1564 to 1567” translated by Vivian Kleeblatt, 2021. Pg.32f.) To date I have not found a picture of that mayor Thomas Heiliger.
