10th Sunday after Trinity (Israel Sunday)

How blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen to be his special possession.

Psalm 33,12

Introit

I was glad because they said to me, “We will go to the Lord’s temple.”
Our feet are standing inside your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is a city designed to accommodate an assembly.
The tribes go up there, the tribes of the Lord,
where it is required that Israel give thanks to the name of the Lord.
Indeed, the leaders sit there on thrones and make legal decisions, on the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
May those who love her prosper.
May there be peace inside your defenses, and prosperity inside your fortresses.
For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors I will say, “May there be peace in you.”
For the sake of the temple of the Lord our God I will pray for you to prosper.

Psalm 122

Collect of this Sunday

O God, You declare Your almighty power above all in showing mercy and pity. Mercifully grant us such a measure of Your grace that we may obtain Your gracious promises and be made partakers of Your heavenly treasures; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Lesson from the Old Testament

In the third month after the Israelites went out from the land of Egypt, on the very day, they came to the desert of Sinai. After they journeyed from Rephidim, they came to the desert of Sinai, and they camped in the desert; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, “Thus you will tell the house of Jacob, and declare to the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I lifted you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine, and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.”

Exodus 19,1-6

Gradual

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings. From Your presence let my vindication come! Let Your eyes behold the right!

Psalm 17,8.2

Epistle

For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion; he will remove ungodliness from JacobAnd this is my covenant with them, when I take away their sins.” In regard to the gospel, they are enemies for your sake, but in regard to election they are dearly loved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you were formerly disobedient to God, but have now received mercy due to their disobedience, so they too have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show mercy to them all.

Romans 11,25-32

Verse

Alleluia, O Lord, God of my salvation; I cry out day and night before You. Alleluia.

Psalm 88,1

The Holy Gospel

Now one of the experts in the law came and heard them debating. When he saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is: ‘Listen, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is oneLove the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’The second is: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no other commandment greater than these.” The expert in the law said to him, “That is true, Teacher; you are right to say that he is one, and there is no one else besides him. And to love him with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”When Jesus saw that he had answered thoughtfully, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Then no one dared any longer to question him.

Mark 12,28-34

Christian Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Nicene Creed

Hymn of the week

God the Father, be our stay and let us perish never!
Cleanse us from our sins, we pray, and grant us life forever.
Keep us from the evil one; uphold our faith most holy,
and let us trust you solely with humble hearts and lowly.
Let us put God’s armor on, with all true Christians running
our heav’nly race and shunning the devil’s wiles and cunning.
Amen, amen! This be done; so sing we, “Alleluia!”

Jesus Christ, O be our stay and let us perish never!

Holy Spirit, be our stay and let us perish never!
Cleanse us from our sins, we pray, and grant us life forever.
Keep us from the evil one; uphold our faith most holy,
and let us trust you solely with humble hearts and lowly.
Let us put God’s armor on, with all true Christians running

Martin Luther 1483-1546 translated by Richard Massie (LSB 505)

Sermon for this Sunday

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says, ‘It will someday come to pass that people—residents of many cities—will come.  The inhabitants of one will go to another and say, “Let’s go up at once to ask the favor of the Lord, to seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Indeed, I’ll go with you.”’ Many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies and to ask his favor. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says, ‘In those days ten people from all languages and nations will grasp hold of—indeed, grab—the robe of one Jew and say, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”’”

Prayer of the Church—Responsive Form: Tenth Sunday after Trinity 4th August 2024

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Gracious Father, we give thanks for Christ Jesus, in whom we receive the things that make for peace. Keep us trusting in Him and eagerly expecting His final day of visitation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, You execute justice for the oppressed and uphold the poor in mercy. Cause Your Spirit to dwell in Your Church, that we may not lie about our sins and defile Your temple, but follow Your ways by caring for the sojourner, the fatherless and the widow; defending the blood of the innocent; and turning from all other gods. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, You reject the wisdom of this world and the foolishness of our sinful minds. Turn us away from the lies of sinful men and, by Your Word, return us to Your truth, where we find everlasting peace. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bring about Your good and gracious will. Bless those to whom You have given authority in our government to break and hinder the plans of the wicked and encourage whatever is righteous and good. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Deliver Your servants from every evil of body and soul. Provide for those in need, and grant endurance to the afflicted – especially Annette, Micheline and her son, Vazlav and Paulina, Walter, Christoph. Restore them to health speedily, according to Your will. Keep us together in the ark of Your Church until Your final day of visitation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, Father in heaven, we thank You for Your holy things that make for peace: the cross of Your Son, His resurrection from the dead, Your blessed Word of forgiveness, the washing in Your holy name, and the feast of our Savior’s body and blood. Grant us Your peace through these Means of Grace, that we may be Your people and dwell with You forever. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty and everlasting God, because You love to show mercy, hear the prayers we offer for Your ancient people, that acknowledging Jesus Christ, the light of truth, they may be delivered from darkness; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Lutheran Church Missouri Synod

+ Dominum vobiscum +

The Lord bless You, and keep You; The Lord make His face shine upon You, and be gracious unto You; The Lord lift up His countenance upon You + give You peace.

Numbers 6,24-27

If you are called to preach this weekend, may the holy, triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the one true and only God give You His rich measure of faith, hope, love, joy and strength, wisdom, knowledge and insight, clarity of speech, that You preach His holy Will faithfully and His gracious Promises invitingly and faithfully according to His biblical Word recorded by apostles and prophets. His most precious Gospel grants saving grace. It is His “power to save.” (Rom 1:16 cf. 2.Corinthians 12,9).

God´s Word and Luther´s teaching remain forever just as His, holy Christian Church. Hallelujah + Amen. Amen.
