The issues of racism and xenophobia are not new – not even in South Africa. The Christian Church has it’s own issues with these sins too. The current situation in our country shows that this is far from over. The growing number of immigrants amongst us also indicate that these conflicts are not going to be solved overnight. That is why we need to continue to think on them as we dedicate ourselves to pray and work for peace in this land and all its people. Thankfully the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s commission on theology and church relations (CTCR) has published some helpful guidelines and discussion papers to address these burning matters in the past. There is even a relevant piece by Rev. Friedrich Wilhelm Hopf on the Lutheran Co-responsibility for Christian Witness in Southern Africa. They are accessible on the internet and are thus available for your perusal and meditation. They are suitable for bible studies, workshops and discussions.
